My new 120 will be in this week & I am thinking of sitting it on a layer of 1/4" foam. I have heard this discussed before but have never heard a solid answer whether its good or bad or dont matter. I cant think of a reason NOT to do it.

I did it for my 220, good cheap insurance to smooth out any uneveness in the base.

Thats basicly what I was thinking...

what exactly did you use & where did you get it?

I got the white 1/4 inch foam from lowes or menards, but you have to by the pack so you will have plenty left. It is accordion style foam. I couldnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t find the thin sheets that were single. It is 2 x 4 ish size but there are 10 or so panels and it has a plastic sheet on each side

I used styrofoam under my 225. The day I went to get it all they had was 2", so that's what I used. I feel safer with it cushioning the bottom pane of glass so small screws in the stand don't cause potential pressure points. I can't think of a reason to not use it. One benefit of foam is that if your floor or stand isn't level the foam will crush down and your aquarium will sit level .... at least that's what the thinner stuff is supposed to do. My 2" styrofoam is so sturdy that it didn't crush. I figured the 2500 lbs of glass, water, sand and live rock would at least cause a dent, but it's as thick as the day I bought it and my aquarium still sits kinda unlevel .
