For those of you with Anglers/Frogfish

PuffersKick

I was considering getting one of these fish for my FOWLR tank, but had a few questions.

1) Will they eat frozen food and if so what food?

2) Are they hard to get to eat frozen?

2) Are they aggresive eaters? Would have to compete with 2 puffers, a lion, and picasso for food.

If anyone could shed some light on those questions or give me any other useful information I'd certainly appreciate it!

They'll eat frozen if you train them.

Here's what I've done.... Start them on live gut loaded ghost shrimp. Use a feeding stick and a short length of fishing line. Stick the line through the tail of the shrimp. The angler will take the shrimp from the stick.

AFter a week or so, freeze some of the shrimp, and sneak a defrosted one in with the live ones when feeding. The angler might give you a funny look when he realizes you've tricked him. He'll get used to eating the frozen ghost shrimp. After a while, you can feed him mostly frozen ones with and occasional live one.

Next, sneak in a piece of frozen silverside or small scrap of fish market shrimp or fish. You'll trick him again, and after a while, he'll just eat whatever you offer from the feeding stick.

The last time I did this, it took a little over 2 weeks to get the angler to take frozen food.

Anglers are not aggressive eaters, and won't be able to compete with puffers for food. Anglers eat lions also.

Some people like to feed their anglers live marine feeder shrimp.

Don't expect any of your other fish to survive in the same tank as a frogfish, no matter how big they are. The power of the frogfish's appetite will surprise you!

If you have a lot of hiding places they might be compatable with the fish species you have but anglers can eat lionfish (immune to venom) and puffers might pick at the anglers apendages (thinking it is a coral, etc)

i have only had 100% success keeping anglers in a species only tank. simply because if it doesnt want to eat the angler (whick your fish list would) the angler will eat it. there are some species of anglers that can live out their lives in a 30 gallon, now wouldnt a 30gal oceanic cube with an angler look cool?

i've got a angler right now in a 120gal. don't do a whole lot but sit on his lazy *** all day. that's cool though he just blends in. He's not an aggressive eater. he won't fight for food at all. I feed him frozen silverside every other day. but when i do my trigger tends to snatch it from him so i sorta kinda have to distract my trigger. Anglers can eat anything twice the size of them but they will die, since they cannot digest fast enough. Everytime i feed lion with silverside he eats it with half sticking out and trigger comes to take it away. anglers and lions are not aggressive at all, their just predators that will eat whatever fits in mouth.
