Formalin in a QT

I've have a pyramid butterfly that I took out of the main tank and put in my QT. I'm treating it with Formalin in the QT rather than doing 45 min dips. How long do I need to continue with the Formalin. It the articles I read I couldn't find that info.

well I know he has fin rot and it was starting to get rather bad, other than that he has had splotches on his body and his scales did not look good. After 2 days I can see that the scales look better. Those splotches, for lack of a better term, were just discolorations on his body at different spots. I thought it might have been brook but I'm not so sure. Doesn't exactly look like pictures I've seen.

So can anyone help me with this. Now that I'm thinking about it how long does it stay active in the water. Is it one of those things that loses its kick over time or evaporates out of water. Am I better off just doing the three 45 minute dips. My Butterfly and Trigger have been in treatment for 3 or 4 days already and i need to do a water change. I'd imagine I'd need to get the new water up to the same level with the formalin.

a bottle of formalin I got from Dr Foster & Smith. Its from Aquarium Products and treats up to 8000 gallons. I have been following the article from TerryB but he just doesn't explain how long you should keep the formalin in the QT tank if treating that way vs the 45 minute dips.

The scales on the butterfly looked really bad and now he looks much better. I'm not sure what would have been causing that. After I treat with the Formalin should I use something else while the fish are in QT?

I have Furan2 and was going to treat with that, Can I do it at the same time as the formalin. I got the formalin for what I thought was some type of external parasite that was causing the scales to look so bad. Like I said that looks much better now after about 4 days of treatment.

Whatever problems he had/has none of them are affecting his eating. I have him eating about 3 times a day from an auto feeder. He is super healthy in that regard. Nice and fat and always looking for food.

Drew,

Where did you get it?

Formalin/Formaldehyde does not last long in water as I recall. You can retreat, as a continuous bath, every 24 hours.

You need something anti-bacterial as well as previously discussed.

I would water change and run carbon for 8-12 hours and then treat with furan or maracyn. (I don't think it would hurt to treat at the same time though)

You should be able to treat with both meds at the same time. Try some seaweed soaked in garlic or what ever food your using soaked in garlic.

Where did I get what? Actually I can answer it either way.. I got both Formalin and Furan2 from Dr Foster & Smith a few weeks ago.

If you are asking about the butterfly I got it from Fat Fish about 2 or 3 months ago now. If you are following the one list Dave gets I've seen them on the list for at least the last month.. was thinking of getting another one. I did catch him picking at my Green Sinularia before I put him in the QT tank. So much for reef safe... haha.

If it only last about 24 hrs I migth just continue on with the 45 min baths and clean the tank to treat it with Furan.

I tried seaweed with him when i first got it. He refused to eat it. He was eating it at the store, but only when the yellow tangs that he was with were eating it. I've tried 3 different times. I also tried mysis shrimp and he won't eat that either. I have about 4 different types of pellet food that I put in the auto feeder that he attacks when it hits the water. I also soak some in selcon and zoe about every other day. He is an eating machine.

If it was a parasite, you have probably been successful in getting rid of it with the treatment you have done. Formalin is very effective.

I was talking about the fish. I did get two and was very displeased with their condition out of the bag. They both perished. I had some of them before the big crash and vey much enjoyed them. They stay in a pretty good school. They seem to be very hardy, but the two I received were in bad shape. They never ate. I even tried loaded live brine.

I tried to get a second one. Fat Fish got 2 in and I got the 2nd one but a few days later the other one was back in the store. A Maroon clown beat the snot out of it so the guy brought it back. At the time mine didn't look good so I held off and when I got the QT up and ready the other one had already died in the store.
