Fowlr Phosphate removal

Phosguard can be put in whatever filtration unit you have and when full of phosphate it can be regenerated to use again. Its a resin pellet sold by volume.
RO DI removes phosphate.
If you used certain sands, removal of the sand can remove phosphate, especially play sand.
Rinsing thoroughly of your frozen foods before putting in the tank. For example put a chunk of frozen mysis in a fine net and run cold but a little warm tap water over the food in the net til it thaws then gently squeeze the food within the net and rinse again. You make think you remove some vital nutrients but you actually dont, thats in the mysis belly, and dont squeeze the net and mysis hard enough to break them.
A lot of phosphate enters the tank in foods we feed.

When my funds allow me to.... I plan on getting on of the Reef Dynamics NoPo filters, looks like a great way to keep that stuff in check

Phosguard can be regenerated? How often should it be cleaned and reused?
Chaeto- Can I use in my existing sump and just add a light? I have a 120gal fowlr.
Reef Dynamics NoPo filters http://www.reefdynamics.com/Reef-Dynamics-Bio-Pellet-Reactor-for-135-gallons-p/bpr135.htm this looks like a skimmer can't I just add the bio pellets in sump? Thanks for all of the options. I am looking for the least inexpensive maintenance way. I appreciate it.
I also heard about a pho filter pad that can be reused as well.

Check the box or bottle for the specific chemical to regenerate phosguard. If not call and ask for instructions.
I cant think of it right now.
Yes there are also filter pads that say the remove phosphate, i dont know how well, never used them.
PolyPad or Poly filter is also effective at removing almost everything.

I would think if you have a sump underneath the tank with a chamber in it that has say live rock or "miracle mud" you could simply add a ball of chaeto and a light and it will eat it up! You dont have to have the LR or mud but most sumps I've seen have a middle chamber and thats where I have always seen Macro Algae's placed with a light.

my sump has 3 chambers:
1st chamber filter sock with some live rock, 2nd chamber protein skimmer, 3rd chamber filter pads, carbon bags, phosban bags then return pump.
I am planning on moving this tank to my house in a wall. I am looking for a better way to control phosphates since I am using tap and I think I need to check the food I have been using which is a mix of seaweed, flakes, pellets, frozen. What type of light wattage etc do I need for Cheato? If cheato can remove alot this may help me alot. Thanks

I have a 18 watt lamp fixture from cpr that is made pretty much for use with a refuge, I believe they have bigger ones, I ve seen some setups that has a light that is like a cone style like you could get at Lowes but I am not sure what bulb is in it. I will ask my buddy what his is since he has that setup. I will reply as soon as I find out.

so a 18w CPR AquaFuge Light can fit without any issues onto my existing sump for Cheato algae? I attached a photo of my existing sump this was before I added a media bag of phosphate remover and carbon to the third chamber. What do you think about adding the cheato to this setup? Thanks

why are you worried about phosphate?

Generally, for a FOWLR, if it is correctly stocked and you are doing sufficient / appropriate water changes, then that will keep phosphates (and nitrates) where they need to be.

I would be aiming at a minimum 20-30% monthly water changes, preferably 25% bi-weekly, and if you are having trouble after that then either you are over stocked or over feeding.

Matt- I have 4 fish in my 120 gal. I am using tap water which I have read causes the phosphate. I know nitrates aren't an issue for fowlr. I generally slack with monthly water changes. I have read about aquaripure to cut down on water changes but if this is a natural way using cheato to keep my water clean I would like to look into it. Thanks

I think it would sit right on top of the sump if you placed it front to back over the chamber that you put the Chaeto in . The buddy I was refering to has a cone style lamp with a 6500k CFLtype flood light setup that you could buy at lowes or someplace similiar. I am in the process of gathering parts for a 125 fowlr setup for my dogface and I am going to go this route. You have a Sump very similiar to his and This lamp works great for him and is less expensive than the CPR. He just has it wired up to hang right over the chaeto and it works very well. Hope this helps

So here are photos of what my tank looks like today: I also tested water and have .5 Phos, 10Nitrate, 8.2 PH, and .00020 salt. Water was changed 2 weeks ago 60 gals. So if all the crap out of my tank is out as well as skimmed and I checked the food no Phos. What is causing this algae mess? I am trying to find out what it is so when I move it and resetup the tank I can prevent it. thanks

Why not get a RO/di unit so you are starting with pure water, and then worry about macro algae or something else if you still have a problem after doing weekly water changes for a while?
