Fowlr ???

My friend wants to set one up. My question is, would LR be ok without any special lighting? Will it still help filter the water of impurities?

Absolutly, avoid the bioballs and go with LR rubble in the sump. In fact, avoid intense lightening with FOWLR, it creates unnecessary algae on the glass and is harder to clean. All the lighting does for the rock is puple it up, nothing more.
