I plan to add a 48x24x12 frag tank and wanted opinions from those more experienced before I built something I might regret.
Frag tank will be in the basement, above a sump it drains into and a quarantine tank not connected to the system. The sump has a pump pumping water up to the display on the first floor, with a drain back to the frag tank. This design allows me to add both a quarantine tank and frag tank using only 8 square feet of floor space, no additional pumps outside the quarantine tank, and only 1 additional light.
I plan to use 4x1 lumber for the stand, held together with small screws (probably #6, 1 1/4 inch long). I don't have a diagram, but this is very similar to most DIY stands built by 1x lumber.
The tank will rest directly (no plywood) on a 4'x2' frame with a crossbar made of 3 2 foot boards between 2 4 foot boards. The crossbar and lack of plywood will let a small amount of light into the quarantine tank below.
On the floor will be a similar frame without the crossbar (2 2 foot boards between 2 4 foot boards). The lack of a crossbar will allow the quarantine tank to be placed on the floor inside the frame.
16 vertical boards will connect the frames making a 5 foot stand. Each corner has 4 boards. Each side of each corner has 1 board screwed inside both frames, with 1 shorter board between the frames screwed to it.
This should be stable enough to support far more weight than the frag tank, assuming I do a good job cutting everything flush and level.
