hey guys i feed my eels and black tip grouper frozen market shrimp and squid 2 times a week. i buy at least a pound of each. it usally last a couple of weeks but it get freezer burn. i fed my fish last night and during the day i saw my grouper throw the shrimp back up. before i feed them i thaw the food out. i threw the left over food away but are there anyways to make the food last longer and stay fresh?

Hi Jiggz, I seen your post at that other site and I got to say on the subject that no madder how well off you are any other person is protecting their frozen seafood's that after freezing can only survive for so long for at most my eel foods do well for an average 3.5 if not four.

But it makes me think that if you are getting freezer burns so quickly that two things come to mind.

For myself I after placing into zip locks that after they freeze up I place again into a second bag and as well you need to make sure your no air inside the bags. You alsowould protect this food long term in not to place right under the cooling fan.

Being I am taking the time to talk to you on this, I like to check with you on how you defrosting this food. For never place under hot water and in the summer months your foods for the eel(s) will defrost quicker for in the cold months you need to often dump the water that you place the eels food in and refill with fresh "room temp water" and "not hot water."

As well please do make sure that the water in this container for your eels food is full enough with water that none the eel foods remains exposed to open air.

You can let me know after a few weeks or so if you see any big changes in the eel foods quality.

But just for the record, which eel species you have?

Also can you supply a food list which you feed your eel?

thanks DME for the great tips. i usally cut up peices of shrimp and squid then rinse them off in the sink. i then just put the food in paper towles and let defrost in room temp. i have a zebra, snowflake and frimbriated eel.

I can pretty much guess that the Zebra and SFE are in the same tank, but I cannot see it if you the Fimbriated Moray in with those two.

It is honestly better if you allow to set in room temp water then doing it that way ;)

shrimp and squid
Is that all that you offer your Fimbriated Eel? Get it octopus and all kind of fresh seafoods like salmon and trigger, grouper and anything else that you can add to its diet.

But please, if you care for the animal as one should, stay away from farm raised seafoods and on the salmon, buy the tail section only because it has no bones and if you think not that you can skin the salmon at home, then ask your local fish market if they can skin it for you.

This anchovies you see, if it is fresh fish, then fine, but if your talking about the anchovies in a can, that you can forget about.

Anchovies are brackish and marine>

Try dipping salwater from your tank out and defrosting your food in the tanksaltwater. Simply dump defrosted food plus water back into your tank. Saltwater is better for defrosting as it won't pull the nutrients out of the food. Also, to avoid freezer burn seal your food in ziplock freezer bags making sure to burp the bag. Then place sealed bag in ziplock container. Have a ziplock bag of food that has only enough for one week of feeding that you are opening regularly. The rest should be sealed in the ziplock and then the container for longterm use without being opened until it needs to be used. So, if you buy big portions of frozen food, divide it into separate bags and seal them in a container so that they don't get continually reexposed to air everytime you feed.

Now being that there be any number of ways for what one could do in the hobby itself for being that there is so many of us who keep these tanks that there is always many difference in our opinions.

Now what I not can see, in my opinion is where you say in to dump the food and plus the "Water" back into the tank. I would never suggest something as that for OK, I might be somewhat old fashion somewhat, but still that part I cannot understand for you thoughts be the water place the odor of the food for peoples eels, they will not need that kind of help.

Like the water I use to defrost my eels food is filtered water, I not use water straight from the sink.

Then place sealed bag in ziplock container.

Now, I have to admit that is something I never thought of ;)

Making bags ready for feedings is something I myself been doing for a long time that a variety (mixer) of foods be in one double ziplocks.

The only one problem I will have is my supply of frozen octopus because I have to buy the whole 24# box that the octopus is in 2# packages for this will last far past even six months for in one 2# package is about 18-22 octopus.

I had offered some people I know who lives near me that they can have some if they needed it.
