Hi Fefe_2! Live Rock is what holds the reef together. It is the foundation of all reef corals and inverts and home to the most beautiful fish on the planet. LR is a vital ingredient to the captive reef, it serves as a naturally occurring bio filter and it is very atractive on display. It is also home to a variety of pods, worms ,shrimp and other life, hence live rock.
I use dead, bleached coral in my sump, it serves me well as a filter for my system. If you want to put it in your tank, you have to make sure that it is completely stripped of all the dead mattere on it and use the skeleton. Soak it in a dilluted bleach solution for a couple of days, then rinse completely. Let it sit in the sun for a couple of weeks and you should be able to put it into your tank with confidence.
