Freshwater to Saltwater conversion

I have a quick and easy question(at least thats what I'm hoping)

I've been checking out used equipment on craigslist recently and found the exact aquarium/stand combo that I want. It currently is a freshwater set up and I was wondering how difficult it is to prepare/convert a freshwater tank to a saltwater tank?

Thanks in advance for your posts I greatly appreciate all the advice I've received on this forum.

wont be very hard, depending on what type tank you want....
Fish Only...then you'll be able to use 99% of the stuff that comes with a freshwater tank.....FOWLR....add a skimmer....reef....add new lighting, skimmer, re-visit filteration options....
but at teh end of the day...not very hard. NOTE: Make sure you get the complete history on the tank..i.e. any copper used to control ICH...etc etc

If we are talking aquarium and stand and nothing more, all that's required to move to salt is the consideration of drilling your tank for a sump if you go that route. Give it a solid cleaning with vinegar to start fresh, and you can start building your salt tank.

Full reef tanks, fish tanks with live rock, and fish only tanks each have different requirements with the other equipment that you will purchase, so have a good idea where you are heading before you begin.

If you can't find out the full history of the tank, you can also check for signs of copper having been used in it. If the silicon is blue then you need to stay clear if it. Copper kills corals, even in extremely low concentrations. If it is an acrylic aquarium, maybe you can get the current owner to test it so you can be certain.
