Frogspawn Zapped Monti? In 15 minutes? (Cross Posted)

Original thread from the general coral forum.. Doesn't seem to get much activity!

Ran into an issue Sunday night that appears to have bleached another one of my Montis.

I was re-arranging the tank, in particular my very large Frogspawn as it had been crowding a Digita (and bleaching it). I wasn't really paying attention and as I was reaching into the tank I split my knuckle on a MH reflector (sure I'm not the first!) I quickly set the Frogspawn back into the tank without really paying much attention as I needed to address my other issue.

It took about 10-15 minutes to control the bleeding and get some superglue in place to close it back up before I could return to the tank.

Apparantly, the Frogspawn had been partially laying on a green encrusting Monti that I have but I didn't notice anything immediately. The frogspawn had been out of the water prior, was slimy and probably not too happy with the situation!

I noticed yesterday morning (Monday, next morning) that the corner of the Monti had bleached. I noticed last night that a larger area had bleached (guessing 10% of a smaller colony). The rest of it looks fine with good coloration and polyp extension.

Does this sound feasible?
Does the Frogspawn pack that much of a punch?
In that short of time?
Anything I need to do?

Thanks for any input!

yes I have seen it done. I had a Hammer that reach out one day with one head and TORE UP and I mean TORE UP one of my Acro- Millipora. It only took a short while. And then the next day when I got home a BIG white hole in the back of my Milly.

yeah LPS and softies can really mess up sps... I had a ric fall into a cap and bleached it in the spot....

Thanks for the responses!

I guess that I didn't realize that the Frogspawn could do that much damamge in such a short time.

Monti looks the same as it did Monday night so I'll just wait to see how it does.

oh yeah, i had my m.cap frag fall into my frogspawn a week ago, im guess it was there for about 30 minutes, a number of spots bleached. Fortunately they are coming back slowly but surely

maybe a little off-topic, but did you use regular super glue to close your cut or a special skin glue? the reason physicians don't use regular super glue to close wounds is that it breaks down into cyanide in the body, and that's not a good thing. the special skin glues are a slightly different formulation.

Actually, I used standard super glue gel. My fiance is an RN and one of our technicians is also part of the fire department/paramedic. They both said it was fine. Hmm...maybe they're out to get me!!

Very little (if any) of the glue got into the wound. I smeared a thin layer over the top of the skin to keep it closed.

Amazing how it works! Falls off a day later and all was good.

Thaks for the advice and concern.

Well, maybe I'm mistaken. I'm just going on what my professors have told me. They could be wrong, it's happened before ;). Anyway, glad to hear you're ok, and yeah I think the skin glue is pretty awesome too.

Hope the monti recovers....

It appears that 10% of the damage has already recovered!

Now, if I could see similar results with my digitata...

Corals are strange animals...

Frogspawns (Euphyllia) are second only to Galaxea and Hydnophora in their ability to burn other corals. Furthermore, montis are the girlie man of the SPS world. They almost always lose out to acropora when they come in contact with each other.

super glue is fine for a cut...as long as it's a clean cut and not a tear with jagged tissue. It's just as good as using dermabond...IMO

I lost a frag of pink milli yesterday, something knocked it into the frogspawn and it fried it.
