Frustrated, ich or velvet...

I purchased a blue tang 12 days ago and put it through the TTM as a precaution. Today was day 12 and besides what looked like stress markings he seemed fine, so I placed it in the tank. 5 hours later I notice it scratching its left side like crazy (on my new coral of all things!). Now the mark I thought was due to stress seems to be due to something else. Now I'm trying to catch the fish by nightfall (the ich falls off at night right?) in hope that my whole tank isn't infected with whatever it is :-(

I could kick myself for not QTing longer but I thought with the TTM I could get away with it. Off to read the thread on catching an I catchable fish....

You made a huge mistake of putting that fish in a DT after only 12 days!!! no matter what treatment you use, all fish should be kept in QT a minimal of 4-5 weeks and treated with przai and cuppramine. Your DT is now likely infected with whatever parasite your fish had . The fact that your DT has coral will make if even harder to eradicate a newly introduced parasite. you will ned to leave your dt tank without fish for about 6 weeks in order to rid of any parasite you may have introduced. good luck. QT,QT, QT!!!!

Tank transfer only takes 12 days if done corrrectly but it ONLY eliminates ich. Velvet or other problems are not eliminated. Fallow period for ich would be 9 weeks, for velvet, 6 weeks.

Angelfish7, I understand that a tank with an ich outbreak must be left fallow for 9 weeks, and the importance of QTing. Bad judgement call on my part. Unfortunately what is done is done. Once I get this guy out of my tank I will keep a close eye on the rest of my fish and go from there.

I'm hoping i did something wrong with the TTM and that it's not velvet. How long does it usually take to show signs of velvet? I never saw this fish scratch during the 12 days but now it's scratching/twitching like crazy.

A close eye isn't enough. All fish need to be removed and treated. Display tank fallow 10 weeks minimum.

Going through this now. It sucks.

If it was velvet I think he would've been dead already so most likely he has ich or flukes. I would put him in QT asap and treat with cupppramine and prazi. And leave that dt empty for 9 weeks. Good luck.
