Frustrations With mag drive pumps

I have a Mag 36 on my water garden, and in May I replaced the impeller, and now it is broken again.

I also have a mag 12 on my reef tank and have had it going for several years with no problems.

Thats crazy Bruce. I have put 2 different mag 36's on my gf's moms pond and they both seized up. Must be defective.

I have to say, I just installed a Mag 7 on my tank and it is quite noisy. Works well though I suppose.

I have heard the most strange differences on Mags. I run 2--a 7 and 9.5--both are quiet as can be (both are run submerged in the sumps) and I have never had any problems....

I wonder if the pond mags are getting more crap in them to break their impellers.

That is just crazy to have that many problems with them.

I will say that my mag is a bit louder than I want, but I think part of my problem is the the pump is causing my PVC to vibrate, which then rubs on my tank cabinet holes.

I have a Mag 7 (used to be a Mag 5). It used to be noisy. With a little tweeking with the plumbing, the canopy, and where the pump sits, I've pretty much eliminated all the noise. Now if I could only find a good, quite fan (or two)

Travis--Do you mean fans for your lights/canopies? If so--I use a radio shack cooling fan (273-241C) on all my DIY canopies with both PCs and Halides--works superb and is super quiet

I had the Mag 36 set up where no debree would get into the pump. The only thing that I can think of is that not very much water was circulating through it. Maybe it got to hot and broke the impeller.

I have a mag 12 on my reef tank and have never had any problems with it. I have had it 2 to 3 yrs.
