anyone know if it is better to scoop of syphon the sand out?

If you want to get the sand out without much water- scoop (but it could scratch the glass on the aquarium).

Stir it up really good and syphon it if you want to get it out quickly (still could scratch tank though)

Best to scoop, so you can see if there are any necrotic areas. Any sand that has black stuff in it was probably covered by rocks or in low flow area and would need to be disposed of. The black areas means that the bio filtration was killed off, leaving the areas basically to rot. Shouldn't be too much in most tanks, but it can happen in even the best and most developed tanks.
