"Gaping?"

i apologize for the newb question but what does it mean when ppl talk about their clams gaping? i see it used in a negative context and can't seem to figure out what the problem is.

the opening with cilia (not the siphon) is wider than normal, usually accompanied by a lack of mantle extension- the condition often indicates poor health.

my crocea sometimes gapes but mantle is fully open... is that ok or that's bad too...

depends, but croceas can do that, as i understand it- mine does, too.

Also Tridacna squamosa and gigas will gap on occassion but when a Tridacna maxima gaps then I start to worry a little.
