Yeah, HLLE is not from carbon. There have been studies, but they are only done with fish within a fish tank. That can lead to many causes. I believe it is a diet and vitamin deficiency.
Either way, I doubt your fish had HLLE, since it does not come on and go away so quickly. Just my opinion though.
