General Questions about clam

I know the smaller ones you need to feed but how often? How big until you do not really need to worry about it? What is the best way to feed the clams? Can you feed them anything else beside phytoplankton?

I was talking with mbbuna a few days ago and here is what he told me on the subject.

The smaller clams can live on light alone, they don't really need to be fed, but does not hurt.

The biggest problem with small clams is stress. They may be fine for a week or two, but the stress gets them. He said they are mainly imported from somewhere in the area of the orient. The shipping, distributor tanks, dealer tanks, causes a large amount of stress.

But, if you want to feed, the bowl method will work. Submerge a bowl in the tank, place the clam in the bowl, bring the bowl to the surface and add phyto. The clam will filter the water until it does not need anymore. Put the clam back in the tank.

Or, get a large tube that will fit around the clam. Put the tube into the water around the clam with one end out of the water. Add phyto to the tube and wait a few minutes. Remove the tube and the rest of the tank will use the phyto.

Chris should chime in here sometime and give his expert opinion why not to get a small clam.

clams are fully developed and house enough zoox to live and grow from light alone at a very early age(millimeters in length). adding extra food just for the clam wont hurt any but it wont guarantee success. most reef tanks with a healthy fish load, that are feed regularly have plenty of nutrients in them to feed the zoox that in turn feed the clam(providing you have plenty of light).if you want to add food just for the clam,IMO live phytoplankton is the best because it's fairly easy to get, not too expensive and is the right size range for clams. the bowl feeding method works great, but if your tank can handle the extra food just add it right to the tank. i would start at 1/4 of the recommended dosage every other day and see how your tank handles it. there are a few other foods that clams may eat, but how much they will actually eat and digest i cant really say. you want food ideally in the size range of 2nm to 50nm, anything over 150nm or so will most likly be rejected

some are

rapid changes in water parameters ( temp, salinity etc. )
lack of light ( alternately to much light 24hr )
fish or other inverts nipping at or just bothering
touching corals ( some )
to much direct water flow
parasites
and of course being bagged up, shoved in a box a shipped across the world

that's all i can think of for now .....
