Generator Info Needed

The power has been going off in our area quite often.......4 times since April of this year to be exact:( It went off again last night so I've decided to buy a generator. Only problem is I haven't a clue as to where to buy one, what brand or size I need. I would appreciate any/all feedback regarding the purchasing of one. It needs to be large enough to run my main pump (Mag12), 400 watt for heaters, and if necessary, my 2 110watt VHO. I guess I'm not too worried about running the 2 250 watt MH. Also need it to be as "user friendly" as possible since neither I nor my hubby are mechanically minded:)

Thanks!

Hey Janey,

I just bought one from Menards. I got the medium size one for about 300. That will run half my house. They have a smaller one that is much quieter for about 250 I believe. They are very easy to use and will run about a half a day on a few gallons of gas. Hope this helps.

Depending on what you are doing and want to spend you could look at a standby generator that automatically switches on when the power is off for a preset time. They run between $3000 and $5000 for ones that will run your entire house, including air conditioner.

A standby would be nice but way to expensive! We live in a townhome .......so can't be too noisy........what brand did you buy Craig?

I have to run there tomorrow, I will check on price & details for you. You must must must have it outside when running!!! If you go this route, get the big heavy heavy extension cord. It will cost alot more but the only way to go.

Thanks for the offer, Craig.......BUT hubby wants to run there TODAY:( He's got a one track mind and wants it bought today. I hate it when he gets like this!!! So, will let you know what we end up with.....I know he doesn't want to spend over $500.00 so the $300.00 one sounds good........hopefully we'll get a good sales person! What brand did you buy?

Hey Janey- Not living far from you we have had a few outages also . but only for a couple hours. What I did is use an DC to AC ($50) from my truck. I just plug it into a couple of powerheads and i'm good for atleast 24 hours. I've only lived here for a year but the longest outage has only been like 5 hours. just an idea before you go out and by an expensive generator. and also living in a townhome it might upset your neighbors with the noise.

Thanks for the suggestion JJ........I've already got a battery and an inverter for short term.... Will try to find a quieter generator......I heard that Honda is expensive but quiet......hope I have understanding neighbors:)

Well, after making the trip to several stores, we are thinking of buying a Coleman 3250 for $429.00 at Home Depot........Honda is waaaaay to expensive for our blood! Was told that Coleman makes a decent product.......do any of you out there have a Coleman? Are you happy with it? Is it loud?

Thanks in advance,
Janey
