Mike, I think you hit the nail on the head. The problem is everyone wants more, more and bigger, bigger without contemplating the consequences.
Raising taxes isn't the way to accomplish anything (never has been, unless you're trying to inspire revolt and mutiny). Raising taxes doesn't hurt the upper class people, and taxes are rarely raised on the lower income brackets. Tax increases hurt the middle...which in turn hurts everyone else. Raising taxes takes away my spending money, which takes away income for people working at places where I would spend that money. Sales go down, profits go down, jobs get cut. It's pretty straightforward, but until it happens to "you", nobody pays it much mind. Spending is what fuels our economy...pay the middle class more and they spend more. Sales increase, profits increase, and jobs are created.
Raising taxes to "help the poor" or to increase funding to social programs is a nice thought, but keep in mind that people at the lower end of the middle-income range are now dropping in income and the consequential loss of jobs mentioned above adds more people to the welfare pool. Sure, spending may be up, but so are the people using that spending. Double-edged sword, and it's not the way to win.
Raising taxes also hurts business, both small and large. Small business is how you really have the opportunity to "make it" in this country. Big business creates a lot of jobs. Look at WI's business climate, and how many people are losing their jobs because of companies moving to greener pastures.
Better than pooling the campaign money and spreading it evenly, how about giving half of it to charitabe causes. It's all nice and well that Democrats can campaign for the poor people of the country, but let's face it, they're no less elitist than any Republican out there.
And Mike, it doesn't sound like you're a Liberal...more of a Libertarian...which is the way I'd vote (if I could vote) if I thought it could be applied as it should be. Which I don't think it can, unfortunately.
And now, I'll get off the soapbox for the next person's opinion...
