Getting back into the hobby

New member
Long time member but have been out of the game for a while, kids will do that to you. Came back on to get a refresher and look for some used equipment, but can't seem to find the for sale section. Does that subforum still exist?

Looking to go with a reefer 350. Any thoughts or opinions on that tank?

350 gallon tank? Does your Chief Financial Officer know about this? If not, you might end up sleeping in a 350 gallon tank.

Finding good used equipment for that size of tank will be harder than trying to find stuff for smaller size tanks (100-150 g) as most people tend to size up in time and typically get rid of large items when they get out or find out that what they bought just doesn't work for them anymore.

You can try local Craigslist, local fish store, local clubs, and such. Me, I tend to buy new....I prefer my stuff without the 'fish smell' when I buy.
 
Lol thanks for the reply Sinn.. I had to obtain approval just to get back into it. Sadly it's not a 350 gallon. I was referring to a red sea reefer 350 model which is just shy of a 100 gallons full system.

I'll probably end up going new if I end up going with this model, but am not opposed to used if something comparable comes up.
 
Welcome back aboard Mike. Just do a price comparison between new, and used. If you have the extra $$$, might of well go new with a freash tank IMO. Good luck with your build.

I would look at buying rock new unless you KNOW the exact history of the used rock someone is trying to sell you. The last thing you want in a new tank is a pile of rock with nasty critters in it that the seller couldn't get rid of himself.

Live rock $$$$$$
Dead rock $$$
Bare tank -

I would buy new sand just because there is other ways of getting a tank started than using used sand from someone else.

Measure once, measure twice, and measure one more time before you whip out the card and buy something that will not fit your tank.

Look at things that you can create yourself. RO water can be bought but spending a little up front for a RO kit so you can make your own will pay off in the end.

It seems to me that most of the money does not go into what is in the tank but into what is needed to keep alive what is in the tank.

Thanks for the advice, really appreciate. I ended up ordering a Red Sea reefer 350 with the white stand. Can't wait until I take delivery next week.
