Getting back into the hobby.

After a LONG break I am thinking about getting back into the hobby. for the people that do not know me I got out of the hobby after my dog died from eating Zoanthids. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=158663&perpage=25&pagenumber=1

But any ways, I need a sump for my 120, live rock, and sand. And of course I will need frags.

Is there a date for the next frag swap?
Is southdown sand still available?
I'll get the rock transshipped unless anyone knows of some for sale local.

Sometime in March, IIRC

Not usually, i though it was pretty difficult to find it. I am sure others with sand in their tanks will speak up

Great time to go BareBottom

PM if you want sps frags

Later

I was thinking about a shallow sand bed for looks only.

March is a good time frame. I'll have the tank up and stable by then.

I have been catching up on what has changed in the hobby. I should be good to go as far as hardware except for a sump.

I pulled my stuff out of the barn today.

120 RR tank
440 watts of VHO
2 x 250 Watt MH
Closed loop with a Squid about 600 GPH
Sump return on a sea swirl 900 GPH
AquaC EV 180
I replumbed my RO system and changed the membrane. 1000 GPD

I have a DIY Calc reactor but I think I am going to go with a kalwaser drip this time around. I had a constant battle with hair algae before.

Are there any good acrylic suppliers in Cleveland south west suburbs ?

What size sump (tank) are you looking for?

Something that will fit under an AGA 120. I would like acrylic so I can drill holes into it for the pumps and skimmer. But I am not set on anything yet.

What do you got??

Hi Kevin,

Glad to see you return, if you need any free frags stop over when you get your tank up. The next frag swap is 12-4pm on 3/25/07, 22001 Brookpark Rd. at a VFW hall by Hopkins airport. Southdown sand is still around but it's called by a slightly different name(Newcastle?). Salty Critter has some good prices on live rock(always good to see what you are getting). Good hunting.

Hey Kevin

I was at the swap in Rick's basement when you got the call about your dog being sick. I was just getting into the reef side of the hobby, and will always respect zoanthids because of that incident. Terrible thing that happened. :(

Anyways, good youre thinking about getting back into the hobby. :)

Same here, that was a sad day. I've got some free sps frags for ya when your ready or some nice zoo frags
Erik

Kevin, I believe you helped me out a while ago. I have 3 bags of southdown and a couple of acrylic sumps I think I have two, i'll check. there your if you will pick up, Glad to here your back in the Hobby, Paul

Dave, Thanks for the offer of frags... I will stop over when I am ready. I will be glad to see you again,

Erik, I may take you up on some SPS. It may be a while as I still do not have the tank wet. I did start some plumbing. :)

zeppelin, I too will respect Zoo's. I may end up with some but were I am putting the tank I will be able to close the room off from the rest of the house. I am going to be extra careful. I already have the gloves that go all the way to the eblow.

Paul, I would be very happy to help you clean out your storage area. Drop me a PM and we can work out the details.

Does anyone know if Connie is still around?

Connie moved a few months back and took down her tanks. Im guessing she will be back soon....I hope. I haven't seen her at a meeting in 6 months though

I will be breaking out the gloves again, which I have not used in some time. I knew most corals were toxic to some degree (have had stings on the forearms before). I really had no idea that they contained toxins that potent. I also have my 12 year old daughter help with maintenance (even has handled corals from time to time), no more (with out gloves). After doing the prescribed reading I have also learned that not only zoos, but all softies should be considered dangerous in the same way. It seems that dinoflagelates (cyanobacterias) are partly to blame, so who knows, a typical AQ cyano breakout could be potentially dangerous, and the corals could become more dangerous as they are exposed to the cyanos. Who knows...better to be safe than sorry, especially with the kids... good luck with the new set up.

I ended up buying her 180. I think she sold off most, if not all, her equipment.

Hi All,

Connie moved somewhere in the greater Akron area and sold or gave away her stuff. Good person, I hope she will get back into the hobbie one day. Connie, ya out there????? I've got some free frags for you.................
