Getting back into the salt world

I have been out of the hobby since 2006 and I see that the salt world has advanced quite a bit , so I have a few questions to get started again. First question is LED lighting will this support SPS coral growth as well as LPS? Controllers what is the must have controller these days any input would be greatly appreciated.

I use VISPARSPECTRA 165w on a mixed reef and have no trouble supporting SPS. Also does a sunburst nem, a maxi clam and a derosa. This rebuild 24 months old.

The downside is no software control via network, so no colour rendering, sun mimick, that type of stuff.

It just depends on your budget and what your trying to accomplish.

MH with T5 support is still the best for ULN SPS only tanks, The MH light reaches farther so placement anywhere, with LED, it's best to put high light items closer to the top.

Leds are certainly capable of supporting SPS..
And dont tell anyone but there is less need to have a controller now than in the past..many devices have enough smarts to run on their own..
One can get all the control most need via a $30 wifi power strip

Hey unc me too on the 165s. what are your blues and whites timers on and percentages?

Nice, I'm only running 40 and 20% from 5pm-9:30pm...

I think since I'm starting to beat my GHA issue maybe I can up the % and durations?

Depends like you said on algae situation and what your trying to support.
Your photoperiod is 4-1/2 hours? Seems short, even for GHA management so you may consider opening up the full photoperiod, say 8-9 hours total.

As far as intensity, I would ramp up 5% every two weeks until I started to see more algae growth, then backed off 5%. Seemed 75-35 is where the limit was until about 12 months maturity, all algae gone, then I finished the ramp with 100-50 for the last 6 months or so.

It all about finding a balance where corals are happy and algae is not.
