That's what I use to clean my skimmer cup. Get one slightly wider than the gap between inside tube and outside. Couple of swipes and it's good to go.

Magic Erasers are a Melamine resin foam:

Its actually inert, but a great microabrasive.

Yeah, as long as its the original one, not a kitchen or bath version which contain other things than just the foam itself, it is safe to use. I find it safer on my acrylic tank than the acrylic pad of my magnet cleaner by far. Only real problem is they do wear out.
