Glass Heaters

Well I came home today to a very sad looking frag tank. I got to looking and found that the glass heater in the tank had apparently stuck on today or yesterday and got hot enough for the glass to break. It looks like I may have lost a bunch of frags, including about 6 acans, 3 chalices, and a host of other things.

Also learned exactly why I should unplug things before I stick my hands in my tank. I am sure you can all quess how I figured that out.

Titanium heaters are on order now.

You might want to consider a controller.

I am going to go ahead and get an aquacontroller in the near future. I am wanting to upgrade my tank soon to a larger tank and plan to do get the aquacontroller then.

Hey, is it possible glass cracked first?
I have 3 smaller heaters in case 1 would stick on, it could not over heat so much. Doesn't help with shock hazard though.
Now I'm worried, one of my 3 is glass.
Good luck, I'm glad you are okay.

I do that with my display tank, I just had the one in the frag tank. I should go with a couple small ones on my frag tank as well.

Man that sucks Billy. Trust me, I feel your pain on learning the unplug everything lesson... :D

I have only had one glass heater shatter and I believe it had been run dry once and the glass was already damaged. I would suspect there was a crack or flaw in the glass to cause it to shatter.

Not to be a huge downer, but you might not want to reuse that frag tank or if you do make sure to wipe it out with muric (spelling?) acid or a similar solvent, as the hot coil will have released heavy metal ions into your tank and heavy metals like to attatch to glass. Copper will actually leach from the glass for years after a copper treatment has been used in that tank. Just a heads up to save you some mysterious deaths.

Congratulations at the success of being a huge downer. No biggie, I will break it down and replace the tank's. I didn't like my sump configuratioin anyway.

That sucks man.

I had a one month old Visi-Therm explode in a tank before. Never again, no glass therms.

I was going to ask you if you wanted your cooler back so I would have a excuse to come over and see your new frags your always picking up.

Your welcome anytime, I am around home today for the most part getting ready to travel again tomorrow.

The frag tank is pretty thin right now though. I broke it down yesterday adn cleaned it as good as I could. I am going to try to go ahead and use it instead of replacing them. Of course there is still a bunch in the display tank, but pretty much limited to the ones I got at the frag auction. Everything that survived the heater malfunction is in the damsel dungeon/quarantine tank. I was able to save three acans, most of the zoanthids, one palythoa, and of course the indestructible hydnophora. I am still not sure on the 2 caulastrea's.
