Glass holes overflow noise

I am debating how I want to build my overflow (or just buy it.) I was told that the only way to have a quiet overflow is to have a bean-animal (or the like.) I had planned to do an internal overflow with the holes in the back going to a 90 pvc, then down to the tank. I was told that this would be loud or hard to do.

So I decided to look at glass holes overflows since I heard they were pretty good. They have the same thing that I was planning to do...

How is that not going to be loud? Would that work for me if I just did a 90 with an air hole drilled in the top as they have? Or are they doing something completely different that I'm not seeing?

I'd rather not take up too much space inside my 40b or build an external overflow box.

I had one for a while. They aren't silent, but they aren't deafeningly loud. If you have a really quiet tank and a quiet room, you'll notice it.

You don't need the double overflow, I had a 50 breeder and the single overflow worked well for me. https://flic.kr/p/whyXKw

That being said no matter what I tried I couldn't get it quiet, it wasn't loud but I still heard the water gushing down.

If you want quiet and easiest, use an external overflow box and use the herbie method.

I'm building a modified bean animal using 90's and custom overflow box

I should be building the box this week.

That looks nice, Ollie. I planned on doing one pane of glass across the back angled for the overflow, then have two holes drilled with 90s in the back. One would be slightly higher than the other to act as an "emergency drain." I'm thinking if I use the 90s like the glass holes, it should be relatively quiet. My sump and everything will be in a different room.

Do you have a build thread, Ollie?

Glass holes does sell a bean animal style overflow now. I have it on my tank. It's a bit touchy to any sort of changes in the tank, (maybe the nature of the beast with bean animal, I have limited experience with them) but when it's dialed in correctly, it's very quiet.
