Glass or acrylic top

I want a glass or acrylic top for my tank to prevent major evaporation & fish from jumping out at the same time.

Should I use acrylic or glass & what size should I use 1/4 or 1/2. Obviously 1/2 would be more stable, but 1/4 would allow better light penetration.

Anyway to use 1/2" & still not compromise with something especially designed for this?

Most readers don't use either cause acrylic and glass tops restrict light going into the tank. Most use mesh screen tops to prevent jumpers. You can find them here.

For evaporation most use some sort of auto top off system. Personally I use the tunze 3155 osmulator universal auto top system. By using one you don't have to worry about your salinity going out of wack when you add rodi water back into the system. If you hand fill you take a chance of adding to much or to little this way with auto top off system it keeps your salinity stable.

Also you have to do is make sure you keep water in the auto top off reservoir so the pump don't run dry.

Hope that helps

If you're set on having a top on your aquarium to help slow down evaporation, get some low iron glass otherwise an auto top off unit if you don't already have one in place.

Evaporation is a very important part of a healthy aquarium preventing it will only inhibit gas exchanges and the overall health of the tank may suffer all to save a few pennies on water
