Gobie death!

Hi all

Is it normal for gobies to just die? I have mixed reef tank. Had gobie pair 6 months ago introduced. Have been fine and then this morning I find one dead. I assume I can't reintroduce another mate for the remaining one?

I wonder if another anemone or coral sting death.

I had a watchman goby once. He got to close the "clowns-territory" and suspect the female clown took a piece of his dorsal fins. At that point he was pretty helpless and couldn't swim around. I tried to put him in a QT, but there was heavy breathing and sadly he died the next day. If you have other fish, perhaps they nicked at him and damaged his fins.

Is it one of those sand sifting gobies? If so, those guys are tricky to keep long term in my opinion, due to their feeding requirements. They sift sand on a consistent basis trying to look for bits and pieces of food, and unless you do several feedings a day, they tend to slowly starve and perish. Other times, they may be stressed by other tank mates. They are entertaining to watch, just remember they require a lot of work on our part to keep them fat.

I lost a yellow watchman goby last year, and to this day I can't say for sure how it died, but I mostly think the pistol shrimp did it. My sleeper goby sifts sand of course, but also eats like a pig, and he looks well-fed for sure.
