Goby and pistol shrimp

So I picked up one of each today to try and pair together since people say it's a pretty neat relationship. Well the shrimp got eaten almost immediately by a fairy wrasse. And the Goby just sat there and watched! Doubt I'll get another lol

Its best to add shrimp like that with the lights off and don't just acclimate and drop it in. Use a net or container and place it close to a cave or rock so it has a fighting chance at settling in. Don'tworry about the goby hooking up rright away, the shrimp will snap its claw to let the goby know where it is.

Try a larger shrimp and get it on the sand. Once it gets down in a burrow with the goby, nothing can get at it. They're pretty safe even without the goby, really, as they're very cautious with no goby in the picture.

What happens is they may drag a snail/hermit down into the burrow, intending to use it for shoring. The critter either crawls out or dies, and the pistol eats it if the latter happens. They aren't hunting on purpose.
Get a tiger pistol shrimp and give him plenty of easy-to-reach bits of rubble and shell, and he should leave them alone. Also, any snail/shrimp nickle sized or over should be fairly safe. The pistol will likely shoot it if it gets too close, but he won't hurt it, he'll just irk it and maybe make it hide.

OK I'll probably go to a different LFS tomorrow and try and get a little bigger one, then put him in with lights out. The wrasse goes right to sleep as soon as the lights go out

Wow, what a bummer on the first go around. Ska d and Betta123 had some good advice! When my tank is up and running I will follow that advise. The pistol shrimp I seen at a LFS, was really small I was surprised it was so small.

Been reading some horror stories on pistols. What about just getting another goby? Assuming they pair up too?

What kind of horror stories?
They can't kill fish or shrimp unless they get huge, really. They'll just scare and possibly thwap anything they shoot at.
As long as you don't have precariously balanced rocks or corals on the sandbed/within shrimp reach on rockwork, you're fine.

I used clear rigid tubing, just placed the end of the tube where I wanted the shrimp to go inside the tank, dropped him into the tube and waited till he came out the other end.

Basically about them killing other inhabitants . Other thing I'm not sure about now is the clicking they make, seems like it could get annoying? Anybody here have one? How often do you hear it? I heard 2 right before the 187, kinda loud.

They're only annoying if something is bothering them and getting in their burrow. I hear my tiger pistol a few times every few days... He was very loud when I had too many bristleworms, as they apparently upset him by crawling down his burrow.
You get used to the snapping after a bit, and it ceases to be very remarkable.
Mine kills bristleworms and shoots at snails, but that's about it. I've seen him shoot fish and shrimp, and they just dart away and look upset. He's 3" long, so he's a decent-sized shrimpy, but he can't actually injure anything.

I had a tiger pistol & he was fine. If I fed clams he would snap at the goby but it was just a few times. I never lost any livestock to him & when I first got him it was in a 12g w/ a tailspot blenny. In the 40g he was in with the goby & firefish pair without a problem & they were really checking out the shrimp's house when they first went in. I lost him to old age most likely, he was a moose & about 4 inches head to tail.

I replaced him with a candy cane pistol & he still hasn't found the goby. I see it once in a while, maybe he pops a few times a day.

Thanks for all the input. I've decided against another pistol. I'm sure the wrasse will have him for lunch at some point and I don't want to continuously worry about it
