Gold headed sleeper goby

I recently purchased a golden headed sleeper goby from live aquaria and it came healthy and looks great! However he headed straight to the rocks and made a hudge cave! And he hasent been out since I put him in the tank yesterday and I'm worried about him. Is this normal? And will he eventually come out?

After I purchased mine he hid for about three or four days while he worked on hollowing out is little fish cave. Make sure your rock is stacked well though. Mine started digging under one of peices of base rock which forced me to completely redo my rockwork to make sure it stayed stable. I basically moved all the sand and sunk the rock to the bottom glass just so he couldn't dig under it. Those little guys can move mountains over night. You'll probably start seeing more particulate in your water for awhile and you'll also have to pay attention to your corals since he will indiscriminately drop sand wherever. A friend of mine had a big one in his tank and it buried a large hammer coral and two zoanthid colonies while he was at work. Regardless its a blast to watch them filter the sand for food.

I just got mine a week ago, he is in copper QT glass bottom for now. He is swimming happily now, but should the glass bottom effect him?

I know this post is from last year, but I can not seem to find much on the gold head sleeper goby going missing... All I've found relates to hiding when first introduced, but i'm still researching. Mine went MIA after being in my tank for over six months. From day 1 he was active and swimming around, sifting sand, digging his cave and eating well. But a few days ago, it went missing, without a trace. :worried:

I'd appreciate if anyone has had any similar experience.

Thank you

check the floor behind the tank. They love jumping. I have had 2 different gobies and they both went carpet surfing

Was this a larger goby? I know my LFS sells them very large and they can be close to the end of their life expectancy. Is it possible to be just a deceased fish?

In a 29 gallon tank, the odds of survival are less than wonderful since it must eat frequently rather than only once per day and the sand will become quickly depleted of the organisms it naturally feeds on.

He's in a 72g (not sure where you got the 29g tank reference) with about a 3" sand bed (at the shallowest end), in a tank that had been running for over 6 months before introducing him. A tank, I bought from a friend who had it for over four years. Still, thanks for the feedback.
