I have had a pair in my FOWLR 180 for almost 3 months. Tonight all is going well during feeding and then when I peered back into the tank 30 minutes later one of the goldens is cowering in corner, breathing extremely rapidly, and has turned from bright yellow to very dark and more brownish (the only other time I can recall seeing this color was when I first introduced them to this tank). I turned off the tank lights and turned all surrounding lights down low. The other butterfly procedes to chase the distressed looking one throughout the tank for about 20 minutes. It didn't seem like it was really attacking it, but it was acting very aggressive towards it. The next time I look over, the distressed one has regained all its color and the 2 butterflies are hanging out together like nothing really happened. The only behavior I noticed that seemed different was that few times one the butterflies would nudge the middle section of the other one. Can anyone speak from experience what this was all about? My guess is some kind of mating but I would love to hear from someone with experience. They are each about 4 inches in size.
