Goniopora

wow nice articles. i would end up getting the harder species (Goniopora stokesi). but i have a good feeling about it though. maybe 5 min after i placed it in my tank all the polyps were open to about 3 or so inches. i have never had a coral open up the quick in my tank.

One of my 2 Goni's is being host by my tomato clown. It's tentacles never retracted even though the clown is scratching at it.

depending on what kind you get the hardiness of them will vary mine is the crappiest kind to keep however hes the most spoiled in my tank because of its rarity of survival but mine is doing great and has had two babies:)

So where did you end up putting it?

its on a smooth ledge kinda in the middle with moderat to upper moderat water flow.
i just gave it a squirt of DT's phytoplankton and it seemed to have loved it.

i would post a pic but my g/f ran off with my camera this week, just gonna have to wait till this weekend for that.

let me see some pics of other ppls gonis

Rick, thanks so much for the articles. I had the first one..but not the second. That really helped with alot of info..including the scientific name for my species!I am currently looking to aquire Goniopora cf. somaliensis.

:) anything to try to help keep these things alive. waaaay to
many Goniopora die every year. the sooner we unlock the
secrets to them the better.

i'm not aware of any coral that purposely feeds on phytoplankton.
nematocysts are for capturing live prey.

i just gave it a squirt of DT's to give it a lil kick. this afternoon when im done with my classes i plan on doing some fine chopping of some meaty foods to see if it'll eat that.

what does everyone else feed theirs? (if they do)

also keep the pics comin. can never see too many pics of these guys

Goni's may benefit from some types of phytoplankton, dinoflagellates etc., but I don't believe the commonly available phyto like DT's gives Goniopora much benefit at all; at least not compared to meaty foods.

If your going to use meaty foods, shave it off very finely while it is still frozen (shrimp, squid, scallops, krill, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp....), then mash it a little in a bowl. Feed it directly to the polyps and keep your fish from stealing it. You can also use a tad bit of finely powdered flake food like Formula One (for carnivorous fish) in your mix.

Mashed frozen Cyclopeeze is the best stuff to use.

My Goniopora seems to be doing a lot better since I've been supplementing iron weekly. My open brain has benefited from it also.
