Gonipora Propogated

I have had a green Goni for approx 6 months and in the last month or so I have noticed two knots on the mother colony. Today after the halides went out I notice that one of the knots had detached from the mother colony and is just hanging by a thread. There are approximately 12 to 15 polyps on the new baby.
Is this a common occurance or is this something I should really be proud of? Never heard of anyone captive propogating a Goni before. Any advice would be helpful.

There are a few LPS that will drop buds like that. Turbinara (peltata, I think) is another that drops buds. It must be happy. I just picked up a Goni similar to yours. I hope I can duplicate.

Thats a first for me. I have never heard of such a thing happening on a coral like this bit hey, makes fragging ALOT easier! I would not mind if my torch coral(12 heads) would drop a few babies like that. A little Return on Investment, got to love it.

That is fantastic, I haven't seen a goni do that or heard about it either.

They are so hard to keep getting one to reproduce has to be some sort of accomplishment!!!!!

Be very proud. This is more than likely the start of something truly fantastic. Our green mother colony dropped like ten buds within several months just like you described. Be careful with the babies. Once they drop and become seperated, they are very light and can easily be swept away from the tank's current. We made a little make shift "play pen" out of rubble so they don't wander off. Congrats again.

If Eric Borneman were still around he would probably be very interested in hearing more about it, for his polyp extrusion article, still not very much info on it yet from what I understand he still may be working on it.I think he said it can be caused by possibly anything up to an ancient form of reproduction. I would recommend going to marinedepot's forum and drop a note with your pic, like I said I think he's still gathering data and may need a spot for the goniopora and could be a great contribution :)

Well good news. The "baby" has detached from the mother and I put it in a small plastic bowl with some of my substrate in it. I was worried the current or a fish passing by would move it and I would lose it. It's extending it's polyps and seems happy. I noticed on the mother colony three other knots with small polyps on them. Hopefully it is going to drop those too. The mother colony showed some signs of tissue retraction after I first got it home but that has since stopped.
Thanks for all the response and I will check out marinedepot.
