Does anyone know of an app for the iPhone that will allow me to take a decent pic with the blue leds on? At this point i have to turn off the blue and do a whites only photo in order get get anything half decent. Once the blues are on, even at a low value, the picture becomes extremely saturated.

This is funny. You are the second person I share this with today on this same forum.

If you want to get better pictures of the actual colors with your phone, I recommend using gel filters. I got mine on eBay and it makes my life so much easier. No apps to install, no post processing to do, etc. Below is a picture with a gel in the center to show the difference and also the ebay link.

Just play with all the orange filters and you will find one that makes everything look just like it does in real life.

Good luck.

Thanks for the idea, I'm going to pic up a set of those, hopefully on Amazon. I'm curious though, is that the only way to do it or is there an app out there that can actually take a decent photo with blue LEDs on? Seems kinda sad if there isn't.

I've been searching for an app for that, so far there isn't one. Seems the Gel Filters are our only option.

Do you just hold a card over the camera and take a pic?

Yes. That is all that is needed. As you can see, the pictures come out looking great without the need to adjust anything on your phone or camera. I even use these for macro photos using my DSLR.

This is really a hardware limitation and not a software limitation. The camera has certain built in filters created to eliminate IR light and mimic the human eye. This causes it to be extremely sensitive to certain color wavelengths. Therefore, you can adjust white balance via software all you want, even with a DSLR, but if you are using blue and/or violet LEDs in your tank, you will still need to do some post processing in a computer to get it to where it needs to be.

The alternative is to use gel filters to block that wavelength that the camera doesn't like while you are taking the picture.

Good luck!
