Good Feeding Current Alignment

Hi all,

I'm doing a research on feeding for corals
And I have a little data on my research, only on my unreliable measure experience .
So I need your Help for comments and discussion.
Best with exited study .

Thank you.

Background
Coral can feeds both from zooxanthellae and somethings from the water column . This "somethings" may come from many food sources such as : Phytoplankton , Ciliated , Zooplankton , fish and invert Larvae , detritus and DOM

I'm focusing about the prey items that Coral Polyps can capture.
this captive procedure may affected from many factors such as
1. type of foods
2. size of feeding particles
3. active motion of prey.
4. passive motion ( Water movement )*
5. Chemical signals and toxicant contained.
6. etc.

My Experiments
IMEO I have stirred detritus from the bottom of my tank , but my coral polyps don't response as well , but not vermetid snail . Unlike Liquid Food for Filter Feeders , these kinds of Commercial Food can trigger Coral Polyp to Response QUICKLY

What will also trigger a feeding response will also be determined weather or not you feed yoru corals and if you do feed them, what time of day do you feed? My corals extend their polyps during the day since i feed the tank during the day and have retracted polyps at night.

From my first experiment I supposed :

Type of Foods play a role for Feeding Response

in my second experiment
I want to declare about Current alignment that is the best for coral Feeding automatically or Naturally ( especially Non Photosynthetic Corals , It seem uneasy to feed one colony for many times a day by direct feeding .)

In my desing I discuss 2 models of Current
first is Type of current that compose of
1. Continuous Laminar current ( as powerhead , or like a river )
2. Pulse Laminar Current ( I have heard from scuba diver, but not myself experiment , that filter feeder Dendronephthya occur and survive mostly around cave or place with this type of current )
3. to and fro Current ( this come from effects of Wave Oscillator with tide around fringing reef near shores .)

second is flow velocity of the current .
This may implied on Polyp-Prey Contact time . and how Polyp can take the food from water column.
that is

i want to know about best Polyp Contact time to stimulate best Grasping Reflex esp. NonPhotosynthetic Coral. as Nepthia ,or how much lacking-time that Coral Polyp use to Grasps Food

IMEO the polyp contract time when it get some feed is around 0.1-0.5 sec. Lack time and 0.2 - 1.0 sec to Grasp. do you have another studied data?

and the second.

and the secondWhich Characteristics/Type of current is best for coral to grasp. the foods.?
I have a little knowledge about this , so I wish your help.

Thank you :)

Thanks for comments.
I usually feed them around 01.00 am - 02.00 am daily.;)
I had 2-T5 bulbs opened since 07.00 pm to 02.00 am . my tank ( Raceway ) recieved direct sunlight around 12.00 - 05.00 pm.:)

Not sure if this helps you at all but my corals seem to follow Pavlov's dogs. Not that they drool but if I set up a fixed routine IE:

Turn off pumps (3 sets) and feed the corals at a set time, I can be assured that within about a week, at the moment the pumps go off, a profound feeding response occurs before introduction of any food. LPS corals seem to be more sensitive to this than the SPS. Soft corals do not respond very well at all.

Other observed: This response is also related to the time, if I vary the time by more than about 30 to 45 minutes it affects the feeding response (much slower to respond but it does happen)

Lighting does not seem to be such a large factor either. Though many of these coral are nocturnal feeders in the wild, they are more than happy to eat during the day

Oh Thanks,it's help me a lot ,and I agree with u .
I've been trained as a psychiatrist before :D
I suppose in wild , Noctural plankton are much more active with higher quantities than day period.

When we train the coral , it will display as a behavioral sequence.

As a Dr in Thailand, you must be a study in patience and learn to work with what is at hand. We ship cases of sample meds every year to the middle east (Dr is from Jordan) and it is amazing with how little compared to the US they have. I spend my days mixing immunoglobulins and antigens and for what is just routine, is unheard of outside our borders. Now how did you get involved in this coral study? :)

I think also if you put out an XLS file to the users, they will fill in the blanks pretty reliably on feedings, amounts, times, types or other data you are looking for.

:p
I studied in area of Marine aquarium since 10 years old [20 yrs], before I studied in medicine.
I think only one Professional area is not adequate for me to be business builder.
Now I 'm working in Medical fields beside with Marine Aquarists fields to make my dream come true.:p
And I plan to study MBA & Lawer after my business is settle enough..:p
