I have two types of photosynthetic gorgonians and they stopped opening up fully. One of the varieties is a larger polyp type that is growing very fast in my nano-reef that has poorer water quality and lighting, stronger water movement and equal algae as my large reef. They accumulate a layer of brown algae and seem to slough off every couple of days in addition to my foxface diligently picking it off.
Their polyps emerge partially and then retract again after about six hours once clean. They use to always be out fully and the only difference that I can remember is doing my first ever water change (with RO/DI) when I relocated the sump from the laundry room to the garage. I also increased the effluent from the Ca reactor to raise the Ca and KH levels, although now there seems to more bubble formation on the rocks but not the corals. My pipe organs and all leathers are starting to close up regardless of my repeated turkey basting off the algae. All of my SPS, LPS clams and other inverts are doing better than ever. Any ideas?
