Got a question for you all

I posted this in the lighting forum. Wondering what you all think ...Im thinking about putting a light on my fuge and its only about 5-6in deep of water and its a 20 gal. And i want to put a few acan frags in it . Do i have to compensate light strength for air or just water

Thought you were strictly sps???? not sure about the lights. I would think only air since it is so shallow.

Oh i am .. i jumped on this acan craze and my tank has to much flow for them so they have to go in the fuge.I have a 70w dome light on it now. They seem ok for now but I get no color out of them with this light

Depends on how "dirty" your water is. If the water were crystal clear (and nobody's truly is), then it wouldn't attenuate light any more than going through air. BTW, Joshi's PFFD numbers at taken at 18", and you can find what they are at any distance by multiplying by the square of the ratio of distances. So, at "b" inches, the amount of PAR to expect would be (b/18)^2X(Joshi's PAR number). You'll find that the intensity is less than this predicts because of DOC, dyes, etc. in your water.

The distance through the air has almost negligible affect at the range we are talking about (12" or less). I would consider water depth the defining factor.
