Got Aptasia?

Fragmented

I'm going to experiment with Berghia. I need to cultivate a healthy source of their food first---Aptasia.

Let me know if you have any you would like to get rid of. I plan on being at the meeting on Friday.

Thanks

Thanks MandM.

Justin, I don't have any yet. I have to raise enough Aptasia to keep them alive first. They eat like pigs! I figure it will take me a few months to build up a big enough food supply.

There are a few places selling them online. My husband is the one doing that side of the research. The bookmarks are on his computer. We still don't know the reputation of any of them yet. We will be getting them from different places to have genetic diversity.

I'll let you know how the experiment goes.

A few days ago I actually threw away an entire piece of live rock because all my aiptasia was only on this rock. So I don't have any aiptasia but I have a bunch of majano anemones I can bring you if you want.

i'm looking for pests too, i just upgraded my pest tank from a 1 to a 8 gallon, this tank will have non-reef-safe occupants like crabs, some shrimps, maybe a very small green spotted puffer, and the majano anemones i have. the majanos i have are pinkish, i know i have seen other colors and i hope to find some of another color....

so if any one has a "pest" they don't want but don't want to flush then throw it my way. :)

PS
what the heck are Berghia!? i have never heard this name

What I have read so far on nudibranchs is that they get really toxic when they die. I had a velvet nudi die in my 50gal about a year ago and it took out 4 fish with it, causing me to start the tank completely over and learning about the benefits of QT. So, would you want to keep these guys in your display tank or just alone and feed them by taking rocks from the display tank and putting them in the nudi tank to clean?

Good point, powerheads as well can dust em in an instant too. Maybe a meshed screen could fix that?Might make the pump run a lil warm though, not sure..And thats not to mention natural predators possibly my wrasse?Nothings ever safe:rolleyes:

Pico1, thanks for the offer of majano anemones. The Berghia only eat Aptasia, though. Too bad you already threw yours out.

MandM, I was also concerned about toxicity. I have always been a strict QT user. For that reason, I have stayed away from adding toxic inverts to my tank. In my research I have found nothing to support this concern. To the contrary. I have read a number of reports from people that did not remove them after they ate all their Aptasia. Berghia are very small. Once you put them in the tank you will most likely never see them again. Your Aptasia will simply disappear over time.
