got my equipment room!!

well after much hubub about it, I finally got the random cedar closet under the stairs cleaned out and ready to be my new equipment room!!! I'm going to have to move the 72 over about 2 feet to make use of it plumbing wise easily but other than that it should be alright.

Spent the day going through all manner of random stuff stored here and there of course, and then on an ADHD tangent while at home depot buying storage tubs came home with new cabinetry, countertop, and sink for the kitchenette.... Just finished cutting the counter for the sink and should have the whole thing done by tomorrow evening (just in time to flop my new sump.... eat your heart out bob vila!).

Oh and Tim, the access panel for the drain on my whirlpool tub (which happens to be in the bathroom opposite the closet) is in my equipment room.... I'm soooo stealing your water change idea, only I wont have to hook up all manner of hoses.... I WIN!!! (and I owe ya $10 as these floats work). Unfortunately the closets small and of course funky shaped as it follows under the stairs, but I should be able to plop my new 20H fuge, a 20L frag tank and my canister in there along with all my gear no prob. Only thought I have is whether to tear into the wall to hook my RO up there or continue the bucket toting I've been doing.... I like using the RO in my coffee and such, be a shame to have it piped solely for aquaria.... perhaps a second RO unit off the bathtub feed? Hrmmmm......

I think I've maxxed my home depot card, does lowes offer credit?

Sounds good. I wish I could have plumbed mine straight into the drain and didn't have to hook up that hose. It's still better than hauling buckets though.

Very Cool. I wish I could direct plumb my tank. I just droped 5 - 10 gallons onto the kitchen floor Friday, doing a water change.
Its also nice to know I am not the only one drinking my RO. Just last week at Whole Foods Kelly was telling me she wanted to get bottled water so she is drinking more (and getting up more often in the middle of the night, but I digress). I had to ask her if the 80 gallons in the storage room was enough.
She keeps forgetting we have a plethora of good water in the house.

Hah Thurge, I came home the other day to a brita filter pitcher and could only think.... why...

alright so as of 20 minutes ago the kitchen is done.... lot's of major work and a huge pain in the back for me but I got an equipment room, and a new jigsaw outta it (yaaay).

On the equipment room, I'm looking at the setup here and I'm wondering if I can do some strange horizontal plumbing from my overflow to get it over far enough to put my sump in the room. I can probably get a real light downward angle on it to keep water flowing but not sure. I've got to go about 2 feet (figure 3 feet of plumbing total) and it's a 1" overflow...

I guess my other option would be to pump water from the existing sump out and into the equipment room.... but then I'm matching pumps and dealing with all manner of strangeness....

ideas? I've got to go all of 6 inches back and 2 feet to the left, bulkhead is 28 inches off the ground and I've got two 20 highs, a 10 (current sump), a 20 long, a 29, and a 40 breeder at my disposal for tanks....

Maybe go with a larger bulkhead and bigger pipe then you're not as restricted by gravity feeding through a 1 incher.

I just read the second line of your signature.... hah

Unfortunately it's a pre drilled tempered bottom so I'm sorta stuck unless I want to drill another one in the back which would mean taking the tank down, in which case I would just move the stupid thing. I'll probably end up drilling the 10 that's in the stand and setting up a second pump to push water through the equipment room. If I loop it back into the sump I wont need to worry about overflowing and such, and it'll let me keep flow in the frag tank and such when I cut flow in the display for feeding.

The display is looking great the way it is now so it might be a better option anyhow rather than changing flow around up there. I added a powerhead and it flipped everything out until I shut it off already, best not to tempt fate I suppose!

okay I cant even begin to state how much I hate this all glass aquarium stand, I cant even wedge the 20H in there. I saw levensens way of rigging up his 55 stand to plop a larger sump in and it is a viable option but I guess it makes up my mind on this equipment room....

My temporary 10 gallon sump becomes permanent underneath the tank as an intermediate, maybe go deep sand bed? I'll pump water out of that and into the equip room where I'll most liekly feed this 29 for massive fuge / pod tank with overflow feeding the pump side of my 10 sump to push the buggers into the display?

Regardless, I now have climate controlled room for podculturing, going to be important for winter!

Good for you, you'll appreciate the extra effort once the water is flowing and the process is automated. I positively love the ease of doing water changes on the 120 and having RO/DI on hand. No more lugging buckets to and fro. Just fill, mix, heat, drain, and pump.
Pictures?
