last night i bought a 65 gallon tall reef ready tank so i can get some horses, next will be a 40 gallon sump and skimmer,im trying to figure out where to aim flow and any other do's and donts since this is my first time getting horses,i plan on getting at least 6 horses and like 4 pipes, how many horses is too many and please everyone suggestions are welcome, thanks steve oh and the pet store says kellogi will be what i need as far as the type of horses go

Nice size tank for horses!

You can easily keep 6 of most species in that size tank.

Mixing horses and pipefish can be a bit of a misadventure. Pipefish carry diseases that horses are susceptable to. Some people have succeeded, some loose their horses to disease.

I don't know anything about H. kellogi, but I didn't think they were available very often. Check out breeders such as seahorsesource.com and drakomarine.org.

As for flow, thats something you can play with when you set up the tank. You need to cycle the tank for at least 2 months before adding horses. Longer is better. During that time you can work out flow.

In general, you want some low/no flow areas and some higher flow areas. You do not want the high velocity flows found in reef tanks.

Good luck and let us know how things progress.

You are welcome. Take the time to read through other posts in this forum. These questions come up quite often and there are many good posts to read.

Fred's giving you some great advice.

The only thing I would say IME is you want to have some flow through the liverock structure. Often there can be deadspots in the rock work which will trap detritus and eventually lead to nuissance algaes.

Flow through the liverock will also help utalize it's biological filtration capabilities.

On the ixing species idea, there is a thread called "mixing species" where I outlined my view.

Good Luck,

Come back if you have any questions. Nice to see someone planning ahead. Good Work.
