Gray Market

I've been wanting to pick up a Nikon D80 for a while now; it'll be my first digital SLR. I've seen prices from $299 to over $1000 for the body. Is there any way to know if it's a gray market body or not? I think it's safe to assume that the lower end of the price range is gray market, and the upper is not, but I don't want to make any assumptions, the worst case would be to spend a grand then find out it's a gray market body! On the other side of the coin, I'd like to get a legit US imported body for the best price I can.

The other thing I have heard is that Nikon warranties are non-transferable, does anyone know if this is true? If it is I guess I won't be looking at used cameras either.

If you buy from a reputable seller you have nothing to worry about. Stick to places like B&H and you'll sleep better at night. The prices you are seeing for $300 are from scam sites. Always check resellerratings.com if you aren't sure of the site you are about to give your credit card number to.
