greens shrivling

i have some green zoos and they were doing great,growing fast, and had great color. All of the suddent they started to shrivvle up. They are all still there and still open but they are very small and dont grow....at all......any help would be of help haha
 
That is rough, I know of at least two other people going through this right now.
How old is the tank and what are the parameters?
Temp, salinity, Nitrate, Nitrite, Phosphate, Calcium, Alkalinity...

What do you do for maintenance?
Water changed, filter media (carbon), skimming, canister...

It's a pain to answer all of that, but if you do, it'll help us (zoa board lunatics) to help you.;)
 
my greens just went through that, they went from 15 polyps to 2 and are now starting to spawn mosre 9bunch tiny ones popping out), I think time may be the thing now.

Ok.... the tank is almost a year old, temp is consistently 78-79 , salinity is 1.024 specific gravity(i dont have a refractometer), nitrate is 20 and going down... nitrite is 0 phosphate i dont know i havent tested for that, calcium is regular i dont have number at the moment, alkalinity is 130 ph is 8.4 i just added a new 14k 175w MH bulb so its still burning in but ive had these zoos for about 8 months water changes are not very often, in fact i am about to do one but i should probably do them more often. filter media i have just one filter in my biowheel 350 with carbon and NO biowheels. i had 4 cartridges in before but i found that was a nitrate contributor. skimming i have a css 65 im wet-skimming at the moment.water is super clear and all other corals are thriving, candycane,silver something (haha), and hairy mushroom...are inverts,fish are fine, not much of a fish load just blue damsel (1) 2 clowns and a yellow tang. i have a pinktipped anemone and a longtentacled anemone and a skunk cleaner shrimp. i guess thats about it. anything else you need let me know
 
Sounds good. Question, what alk test are you using?

I'm guessing it's your bulb and your carbon. Reduce the photoperiod and remove the carbon. It sounds like you're burning those badboys up. New bulb has a lot more PAR then the old and can burn/bleach them.

Try shading them if you don't want to reduce your photoperiod.
FYI, I don't know many people that have had much success running carbon (for long periods) in a zoa tank.;)

I think the main change was being able to better control my temps. I was fluctuating between 78 and 83 degrees but for the past 2 months I'm at a stable 80 to 82 during day and night. I also started dosing 5mm of B-ionic on a daily basis rather than every other day.

Not sure if these are the reasons the zoas are doing better but I can say that my growth within the past 2 months have been really positive. i've read here that competition plays a role in the success of certain zoas that are populating near one another, I had some large palythoas on the same rock as my greens that may have played a role in their demise but the palythoas are still there so I'm waiting to see what happens in the next couple of months.

Hopefully someone better versed will be able to jump in and offer some insight.

well i dont know if its the light.. they were doing fine about up until 6 months ago (ive had them for 8) and then they started shrivling. Ive had carbon the whole time. I just got my new bulb last thursay and they havent done anything.... for photo period what do you mean?? should i put them lower in the tank?? right now they are about mid-level. tank is 20 or 24 inch high i dont remember off hand. im just using the alk test off of my test strip..it is a mardel 4-1

I have had my zoas do something similar, but it was the white pox affliction.
By changing some water and increasing the water flow in the tank, they came back. Some also needed different lighting, lower/higher.

no because i dont know where to move them they are almost exactly in the middle in height that is and they are in a kind of low flow spot. should i move them higher,lower higher flow or what??
 
i moved them then my skimmer went up and bubbles went all over the tank. I dont know why and i cant seem to fix it. Will all my corals be ok, it just so happens i am leaving tomorow night and coming back monday. I have the skimmer off because when its on everything closes up from the bubbles. They are very tiny bubbles. i put a post in the equipment forum but no answer. Should i go and buy a cheap skimmer for the weekend then find out whats up with this one or will everything be OK from tomorow night until monday
