Group Buy Perhaps?

I was thinking of ordering some corals from Sharky's Reef. Then I thought perhaps others would be interested in doing a group buy. I've gotten shipments from them twice before and have been happy with their corals. They are WYSIWYG, so there are no surprises. I've found their prices to be very reasonable.
I was thinking that we could arrange the group buy for close to the swap. I would be willing to receive the shipment, hold the corals until the swap, and transport the corals to the swap. The only way I'd be looking to have any fish or inverts shipped is if they are something that could be kept in my fuge as I certainly don't want to rip up my tanks in order to remove someone's fish purchase a couple of days later.
If the order is over $250 the shipping cost is free and we'd only have to split a $15 box fee. There are also some sales that occur. For example, right now there is a buy two, get one free in zoo colonies. If two people got zoo colonies they could split a third.
You can check out their stuff at Sharkysreef.com.
We'll obviously have to wait until closer to the swap to see if they have what you want when you want it. I've also found that if I request items they order them for me, so that might also be an option if you're looking for something specific. I'd have to talk to the buyers via IM to get their orders since I'll have to put in all the orders (I'm assuming) at once.
Let me know if you might be interested. It was just a thought.

Great initiative Dyan. This is exactly the kind of thing that we like to see from members! Thank you for looking into the group buy and offering to hold and accept the shipment. I hope there is some interest here so we can keep offering or be offered these kind of things from businesses.

I can check with them if you like about a club discount. Or you can give them my email address and have them email me and I can make sure they get the information from the club to get us a better discount(if they offer one for club orders).

My email is rickyfins@hotmail.com or email to the ncpars.org address at ncpars@ncpars.org

Thank you again!

I can certainly contact them regarding a group discount since they know who I am from past orders. I just wanted to see if there would be much in the way of interest before I went to the "next level" so to speak. Ricky, is this something we could possibly send out in an NCPARS email so that everyone gets the opportunity?
As far as the store goes, they get in a wide range of corals, but I've also had them order special things for me that I was looking for. So, if you're looking for something in particular, just let me know and I'll pass that along. I'll let them know the timeline we're looking at and see what they can do to assist us.

Sounds Great Dyan. I can setup an email for all to get but we need to make sure what the particulars are. Once that is done I can send out an email to all on the list so we get a larger response. Let me know when you know more. Just email me with what you find out and I will email everyone. I am looking forward to hearing from you about this soon.

I have been looking at their site and it seems like they have some nice stuff. If the group buy thing doesn't pan out or you are interested in ordering sooner let me know I may be interested in going in on an order with you as I only live like 20 minutes from ya.

Rick,
I contacted them this afternoon, so I'll get you information as soon as I hear back. I do think it would be a good idea to probably have the information somewhere other than here because I don' t think all our members check here regularly. I don't want to show up with coral and have members upset because they didn't get the opportunity--that might just create some hard feelings.

Shimmy yaz,
Hi neighbor! :) Are you liking the snow? Actually, I am because I got out of work at 12:30 could work on my class assignments for my masters. However, I'm not looking forward to days off from the storm as that just means more days in June with grouchy kids in the sweltering heat (totally not enjoyable.)
I will certainly keep you in mind if this doesn't go through and I decide to purchase on my own. Were you going to the swap? (This one is not too far from us.) Did you think you wanted to maybe get in on the order if it happens?

Mike,
Sorry , I just saw your real name on the last post. Where did Shimmy yaz come from anyway? :) A reference to the band from the 80s perhaps? :)
Actually, I was thinking we probably know some of the same people as Millville is not huge and I have relatives up there. Are you originally from Millville? I almost took a teaching job there but Bloomsburg came in first (two days apart) with a better offer.

Sharky's is great to deal with. they often sell rare pieces for what they're actually worth rather than their hype value.
my snow eye chalice came from sharkys

Yeah hello neighbor. I am not liking the snow very much. I don't get time off for snow I end up working harder covering for people that can't make it to work. :( Definitely keep me in mind and I am also tentatively planning on attending the swap but of course I have also planned on attending the last 2 and couldn't make it so I am not making it a definite.

That is fine I don;t mid being called shimmy_yaz as the name is derived from 2 of my nicknames that people have taken out of my last name. It has NOTHING to do with the horrible 80's band. LOL I have grown up in Millville my whole life so there may be a good chance that I know some of the people you do. Be glad that you got a better job at Bloom because the Millville school district leaves a lot to be desired.

Mike,
Hope you made it to work OK today.

I had heard that the Millville school district left a great deal to be desired, but a friend of mine worked there and was urging me to apply. And, well, a job is a job when you don't have one. I just lucked out that the one at Bloom came up at the same time. One thing I can say you have at Millville that I'd love to have is your HS Principal. We loved him at Bloom and hated to see him go...unfortunately our board didn't vote to hire him :(

I'll keep you informed on what direction the buy is going in. I haven't heard back from Sharky's yet on what they can do for us. Hope to see you at the swap though...they're definitely something worth experiencing. There's nothing like a bunch of reef addicts in a room trying to get a fix. :)

Yeah I don't know the current principal so I couldn't really say anything about that. Which friend worked there? I may know them. Yeah I made it to work OK it was the coming home part that was rough as I work 3rd shift and was at work already before the real fun began. Tonight on the other hand is going to be a different story. Speaking of which I have to be up in 3 and a half hours so off to bed I go.

Mike,
The Principal that Millville HS had came off as a real sleeze bag in my interview. He was one of those people that just gave you the willies. The new principal is someone that I actually argued to hire when he interviewed for our school. He was really good.

At the time she worked at Millville, my friend was Jenna Beers (maiden name) or Jenna Huntington (married name)...she taught Science in the HS. Since then she actually got a job at our MS, so I would have been bummed if I had taken the job just to work with her. Since then she has married again and it's one of those where I'd have to look up her name in my address book :) I also know Mrs. Peters only because I had her husband as an English prof at BU for several classes. He's a real piece of work.

My aunt and uncle live up there and my uncle runs a business there. Are you familiar with the Johnson Saw Mill? One of the owners, Ed, is my uncle. I also know the Beck/Kile family if you're familiar with them.

Well, off to shovel more snow. It's looking like another snow today tomorrow with all this drifting. If they'd plow my road would be nice.
Dyan

If the principal that you interviewed with was Mr. Jones then yeah your preminisition was correct as he was horrible and the principal when I was there. Yes I know Ms. Beers she was actually my homeroom teacher and I had class with her as well her first year there. I know who Mrs. Peters is but never had any classes with her. Yes I am familiar with the Johnson Sawmill and I also know the Beck/Kile family as well. Good luck with the snow and thankfully I got out of going to work tonight :) First snow day for the company in 18 years.

Rick,
I spoke with Anita from Sharky's twice throughout the past week via email. She does not offer discounts for groups, but does offer group buys by allowing group members to individually select, purchase and mark their order as part of the group's (i.e.: "Part of Dyan's group order," in this case). This way, group members could order when they want and pay however they want and I wouldn't have to worry about collecting payment. Plus, people could pay via a credit card instead of having cash for me. Her only issue with ordering now and saving it is that if the coral recedes while in her care she would not want to be responsible for it. So, that would have to be the decision of the purchaser whether buying early to get the coral they desired was worthwhile or waiting until closer to the event to see what was available.

The benefit as a group would be that, as long as the group spent $300 or more, the shipping for all of us would be free. The order could be shipped to me and I could bring them to the swap. I really wouldn't want to set up shipment until the week of the swap so that I have the corals in my tank the shortest time possible. I also would want to stay away from anything fish-wise since this would be a shock to them moving them several times and I don't want to have to try to catch them again to drag them to the swap. Anyone living close enough to me to pick up their own stuff from my house would be welcome if they didn't want to wait until the swap.

I guess at this point I'd need to know if enough people would be interested to make up $300 worth because we're doing this in order to save on shipping. If we'd have to pay for shipping, those ordering would have to decide if the order was worth the cost to them.

Dyan

I actually have two or three times, which is why I suggested them as a safe group order for our club. The first experience I had with them FedEx totally sat on the shipment until it was dead. I was more than upset with them. The people at Sharkys replaced everything where they could have said "It's not our fault." They're really nice people and their corals are "what you see is what you get," so nothing is a surprise. I've been more than happy with their service and their livestock. Plus, their prices are the best I've found online.
