Group Buy: Refractometers

Hello my northern brethren . "Sherman" here from CVR. I just got offered a great deal on refractometers, and wanted to share with you guys. In less than 24 hours, we've already had 16 chime in for a refractometer, and that will grow. You guys could certainly help us reach a better price break, and get in on a deal at the same time.

For your club, I don't mind monitoring this thread for quantities. When all units are received, I can just ship them together to any one of you guys, and let you distribute them at a meeting, or however you'd like. I can't imagine shipping to be more than just a few dollars total, which would calculate into mere pennies over the cost when I start taking Paypal payments.

Here's the info, copy/paste from my thread @ CVR :

I just got offered a smokin' deal on a refractometer group buy!

These refractometers normally run $40 each. The vendor sells them in black, and in blue. The black has been discontinued, but he still has some stock left, so he's letting it go cheap! This is the same refractometer we all purchased almost three years ago, but in black.

10 Units: $30
20 Units: $25
40 Units: $20

In addition, the sponsor has offered calibration fluid for an additional $2.75 with the refractometer.

If you don't have a refractometer, I'll be as bold as to say "YOU NEED ONE." Swing arm hydrometers are notoriously inaccurate. You will not regret this purchase, I promise!

I'll front the costs of this purchase. If we break the 40 units mark (I'm going to offer this to a couple other clubs, as well), payment would be gladly accepted. However, if we don't, I don't want to accept payment until we know which price bracket we hit.

It would be nice to close this before the Social, but timing's too tight. I'd like to give everyone two weeks before I close this. I will make the order on Monday morning, December 18, and take orders up to Sunday night, the 17th.

Please chime in, and tell me how many you'd like.

I could probably go for a new one, the plastic covering broke off so I'm using just a regular piece of plastic ontop, and one of the lenses cracked inside, but eh I think mine still works but for ~$20 I could do for a new replacement

Out of curiosity how are us coastal brethren of you going to get these refractometers? Ship to a single person for distribution in the area? Or someone from your club that makes regular trips here?

I'm about to switch over to salt mix instead of NSW, count me in for one for sure assuming these aren't one of the notoriously failing refractometers?

If needed, I can help pass out any sfbay group buy participants.

How are these refractometers as far as accuracy go? I ask because I thought I saw some threads on RC about problems with calibration solutions.

I've always used a conductivity meter to test my water, so I don't know too much about these instruments.

Ok, I spent sometimes reading the thread. I have the RHS-10ATC and it doesn't look like the one you posted. The RHS-10ATC using screwdriver when calibrate. The one you posted look like it has a thumbscrew. Can you please double check with the vendor what model this is?
Thanks

Hmmm... I always calibrate with RO/DI water. Put some one it and "zero" the visual line. I don't think there is really any calibration beyond that, is there? Alternatively, you can always sample your tank water, check the reading and then when you mix new water, just make sure you mix it to the same point.

Sorry for the confusion on the model. I also have the RHS10-ATC. This one is extremely similar. The photo I used was just a stock photo, not the actual item.

The item in question is this exact unit:

Asico Refractometer - http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merc...duct_Code=REFRACT-AS&Category_Code=Hydrometer

As for delivery, I would think it would only cost a few bucks ($10 at most?) to ship these up to a single delivery point up there, and let you guys deal with distribution. When both of our clubs combined on the RHS10-ATC a couple years back, how was shipping handled?

WTH .. I take one so I have something to compare with my RHS-10ATC :D and I would like a bottle of calibration fluid too.

About shipping.. I live in SJ and work in SF. If nobody has any problem with this, you can send it to me and everyone can pick it up at my house or work place.

OK I will try one for $20. I will hold Phong's 2nd spectrapure order for collateral. : )

When do we need to paypal?
