group of clowns

Ok before people tear into me for asking thats all Im doing right now is asking.

There is a funny corner in the new house I moved into and it spurred a new thought. I want to build a tank that is roughly 36"x36"x 16" deep. I would put a haddoni, preferably blue, into the tank. My question, could I get away with a group of pink skunk clowns in it? I say group because Im not sure how many would be ideal. Obviously I would get them all as small as poissble. This would be a specialty tank so there would be very little else in the tank, maybe a few softies if space allowed, and likely no other fish.

I am not setting this tank up tomorrow or the day after by any means, just thinking it might be a cool future tank.

Thoughts?

Personally I am not a fan of having more then one pair of clowns in a tank. A small handful have had success, but in my readings over the years, more often then not it doesn't work. People will say that pink skunks are docile, my experience is the opposite. Once my pair started spawning they became holy terrors -- case in point when I added a second dwarf angel to my tank, I has very little issues from my existing dwarf, but the pink skunk pair on the other hand went nuts. I ended up selling the pair off -- just way too mean.

I think you would be very happy with just a pair of pink skunks and a blue Haddoni, I know I was back when I had them,

Gorgeous tank, Todd!

I think one factors in whether you want to try something like that is whether you have the resources, time and willingness to remove and find homes for the fish if things start to go downhill.

Thank you very much.

That is a great point -- if one does try this, they have to be prepared for it to fail -- do you have the extra tank for the clowns? Willing to take apart your tank to remove them? Willing to go through the effort to sell them?

I had to do that when my Potter's (( dwarf angel )) didn't take too kindly to my Golden dwarf (( I should have known better, too similar looking )). Luckily I had a tank for the Potter's to be moved too, but still was a pain catching it.

Thank you very much. And what is funny, is that I almost didn't post that picture because I don't like it much. :)

Really? It's a great picture! The colors are great (your nem and fish are too). Too bad you don't have that blue one anymore.

agreed if I could make my tank look like that Id be thrilled.

As to what I would do if I had more than 2 clowns and it went south, my LFS is very helpful and friendly. If I told him what the plan what and what may happen he would be more then willing to take back the clowns.

Thanks guys. The colors just looked a bit washed out to me.

Bues -- I almost hate looking at those pictures, really miss that anemone.

Todd I miss that anemone and I didn't even see it in person! That being said in my experience skunks really range in aggressiveness. It really depends on the individual fish, I have kept a group of 4 in a large ritteri for around 10 months with no problems. I have also had a pair absolutely thrash any pomacentrids that came within their vicinity, including a spawning pair of gold stripe maroons. In my personal opinion, pink skunks and ocellaris are the best candidates for group existance within an aquarium however.

Thanks, one day, hopefully, I will have another one -- at least I have a red one now.

That is the good/bad thing about clowns, each pair is going to be different. And while I won't ever recommend having more then a pair, I would at least suggest that anyone trying this be prepared for it not to work, and under that may have to intervene.

Maybe I will try and find someone localy who breeds clowns and get them as small as possible and maybe Ill have better luck with more then a pair.
