Growing? Monti

All,

Would you classify the white edge on the Monti as growing or a sign of dying?

I am paranoid as this is my most prized piece in my tank.

Thanks

I'm no expert on SPS, so it'll be interesting to see the answer since I've wanted to try some monti as well. However, white is usually a good (bad tho) sign of death. Yet I've seen a number of monti frags and colonies with white edges on the outside growth edge. My theory would be that the new growth starts as white, then turns to another color as it finishes its growth. Is my idea correct? I hope so! Your monti looks very healthy otherwise!

Looks like growth to me... if it were bleaching you'd expect to see white, or a paling of colour, across the whole coral. That looks like it's on the outer edges only. Monti polyps lay down the calcium skeleton, grow new polyps and then they colour up with zoox, so it goes from white to the same colour as the rest of the colony... That white rim will always be the advancing edge of the coral.
