Grrr....

OK. so I got a bone to pick here. or at least vent a bit. I know the critter setup that zero edge tank to use as a frag tank for those of us who have frags to trade them in for stroe credit and those that dont to be able to get smaller frags for smaller money. Well, I called today and they are getting a shipment in and dont want to take any of the frags I have to sell. :mad2: :mad2: GRRR. said maybe in a while I can call and see if they want any, but I need to get rid of these soon as I have no room in my tank and I need to get some food for the fishes. so there goes my business, I am just going ot buy online till they decide they want to do business with us locals.

SO, ANYONE WANT SOME FRAGS!!!!!! I Got LOTS!!!!!!! COME GET EM!!!!! $10-15 each. Buy several and get some free. Orange Monti Cap, Green MOnti cap with blue rim (got a HUGE piece of this 4" across) Green birdsnest, Rust colored Pocilipora, Pink birdsnest, Pipe Organ, Xenia, Pink Millipora, Green Millipora, Elkhorn etc....

Also, someone wanted to buy my entire Hydnopora. I need you to speak up and come get it cause it has GOT TO GO!

I am between Smyrna and the boro off Old Nashville Hwy and Florence road.

I feel your pain on this... and here are my thoughts.

I figure there must be something economically unappealing for stores to do this or it would be something taken a little more seriously by all of them. My only guess is the price point they need to get. I'd say they mark-up the majority of their corals by 100% (a $25 coral would go for $50). Most do this for frags as well, but they would need to sell you 5 frags worth $20 each to make up for one sale of a $100 piece. If I could go in, stock my whole tank full of 15 x $20 frags ($300), wait a year and have a full tank, I would (never needing to buy from them again). Of course, if the fish store can sell me just 5 $60 pieces (which wouldn't fill the same sized tank because most people only want a coral to be a certain size), they make the same amount of money and they'll continue to rake it in as I buy more to fill it.

Being on this board we are used to frags and honestly when patience wins out we can get better deals from hobbyists. It's when we want a nice big coral or happen to see a piece we have to have in store that we'll splurge on a bigger piece. In other words, in order for frags to be economically feasible in a fish store perhaps they either have to be really high end (a small frag at a big price point) or rather large (again at a bigger price point).

Of course, the pricing on a lot of frags is problematic. I won't pay $25 for a 2 inch frag when I see they have a full colony in their tanks for $60. At the same time, they can't expect people to bring stuff in if they are only offering $5 (allowing them to sell at $10-15) when an aquarist knows they can spend a little time/energy and get $15-20 from another aquarist.

On that note, it seems like they are unwilling to just make low offers on things. If I have a tank full of stuff and don't feel like dealing with the hassle of selling them enough, make me a ridiculous low offer... I'll probably take it just so I don't have to deal with them. That'd be better than just saying no... and if the store can get them for low enough they should be able to turn a profit on just about anything.

Of course, none of this would really be a problem if we all could afford huge frag tanks and some other schmuck to come maintain it for us :)

I talked with someone from the Critter about a month ago, that said they were cutting back on what they bought due to the economy ($$$).
They're feeling the pinch as well.

I think you should also look at it this way:

Let's say I take a piece of frogspawn in hopefully to get 50% of what they sell it for (is that in general what they offer?)..

currently they are selling green frogspawn say 4 head for 69.99..maybe 59.99 if your lucky

so if they give me $30 store credit i would then spend that on something that has been marked up as well in the store..

so it makes sense to me that they get the profit in selling my frogspawn frag for twice as much and then get more when I use the $30 store credit to buy something that also has profit margin built in.

I am in there a lot and they always seem to move their frags fairly often..but this is just my take. Seems like it would be good for them.

Hey, gimme $10 a piece. that's all I am asking. My tank is paid for. as I dont do all that extra crap to it. the money I make is for my fishing habit and to buy necessities like food. Heck, they used to buy xenia form me for $10 a stalk. us the other month I threw $200 of it out into the yard cause I didnt want to deal with it.

SOMEONE COME BUY SOME FRAGS FROM ME!!!

A lot may depend on the timing. I'm not sure if they have cut back recently or not, but I know when they are fully stocked the usually don't like to take stuff. The Critter has always been great to our club.

yea, I know they have been good to the club. just wish they could help us facilitate some trade. I wanted to spend some money in their establishment after trading some nice corals, but it aint gonna happen.

I know Critters don't like to take stuffs in when they get a shipment for a fact cause they told me that before. I have taken stuffs in but that's when they have no shipment and they were low on stock. You've got some stuffs I want, but shopping is out of the question for us. We had a wreck yesterday and the old lady drove off with little damage while our car is in bad shape and not drivable. We need a new car, any suggestions?

Hay I will try to get with you after this weekend I have to go to sd for my brothers weding dont through any Xenia away though I want to try something when I get back.

Wayne. when you get back you can come and cut all you want. That said, I will be leaving for business next week thru the weekend. so maybe in a few weeks. I gots plenty for ya. and yes, it will grow up the back glass.

is that a fish, I reallly have Xenia, but I do have mumps leather. it is really hard to frag though.

Mikey, no worries. just had to vent as this tank is starting to grow toether into one gigantic coral hybrid. cept they keep stinging each other.

Welcome to the world of successfull reefing:)
You will find over time that the demand for the common pieces (and even the nicer pieces locally) you have will go down a lot. This happens after everyone in your reefing community that wants one has bought one. You are also trying to sell frags during the summer and when the demand overall is very slow because of the economy.
These two things have reduced demand significantly.
If you look in the selling forum no one is selling corals very fast;)
I agree that the Critter will usually take what they can get rid of fairly quickly when they have room. Five years ago they didn't even take frags and they have changed quite a bit in that regard over the years to help us and of course hopefully to help themselves.
Sorry you are having a hard time getting rid of them.....I've felt your pain many times.

I have both. pompom pulsing and some hot pink long, tall fast growing pulsing xenia. both are very fast growing. I fyou have Halides then watch out, cause it will grow very very well there. I have some neon green Pipe organ which is LPS and would do well. Care for green star polyps?

Any chance you'll be at the meeting Lindsey? I wouldn't mind giving the green pipes a go in the nano. Our other piece met its demise thanks to an urchin mowing it down. Pipes are the only thing I've ever seen them bother with as far as corals. Must be a tasty treat.

I'd like a piece, but I can't justify the trip to the 'boro to get them, so if you can come to the meeting or send a frag with someone then we'd be in business.

Brian. with my work taking me out of town alot lately, weekends need to be spent at home. you ar emore than welcome to come by. I can break ya off a nice chunk if you want.

is that a fish. I have all the xenia you can get your hands on. maybe close to 100 stalks in my tank or more. it is not cut off yet and I dont do so till you get here for it. the GPS are growing on top of themselves. I can get you a single 2-3" frag or several that size. depends on how it comes off the rock. a few weeks ago I niked a bunch of it as it was killing some sps.
