GSP vs algae

Ive got two rocks with gsp on them, it was one colony but when I moved my tank from upstairs to downstairs I moved one rock and ended up splitting it into two colonies. Anyways, ive fallen on some hard times and money is super tight. As a result my water filters filters are in dire need of a change...the filters are over 8 months old...:( Well after some water topoffs im gettin the brown algae bild up...its now on the GSP and they are no longer opening up. Will it hurt the coral if i lightly scrub it with my finger to get the algae build up off? If so, what should I use to get it off of the colonies?

you can scrub them with a toothbrush (not overly hard, it won't take much) to remove the algae, it'll tick em off and they won't open up for a week or so but the algae will be gone and they will open back up.

ahh, excellent Thank you! Im assuming I should use a softer bristeled tooth brush...

On a side note I got paid today so I can finally order some new filter replacements to take care of this problem at the source!

i use a stiff bristled myself but like i said don't be so forceful with it, it shouldn't take much effort to clean the mat.

cool, my girl picked up an extra soft kids tooth brush for me today so ill have a go at it when I get home! Thank you for the advise!

You're welcome. just remember after the scrubbing they are gonna stay closed a week or 10 days give or take. leave em alone, they'll open back up when they're ready.
