gymnothorax tile

I am new to saltwater and was wondering if my eel has to stay brackish or can i acclimate him to full salt?

As far as I know G. tile are a marine species. They breed in fresh and eventually move to marine waters. For an adult a full marine setup would most likely be the healthiest place for it.

Kynigos, has their life history exactly right, born in freshwater and move out to the reefs as adults. They can live in a brackish tank for the duration of their lives but, yes, a full saltwater tank is a completely appropriate place for a Gymnothorax Tile

Thanks for your help i bought a 40 gallon acrylic and i want to set up a nice tank with live rock it would be nice to go bigger but space isnt there right now what kind of fish would be a good idea knowing the eel will be in there

I had one for approximately 5 years in brackish and it seemed to do well, until it escaped and never recovered from injuries sustained during the attempt. However, I have one now in marine conditions and appears much more energetic and robust than the one kept in brackish water ever did. Everything I ever read on this species indicates marine conditions as best long term like badguitarist stated earlier.

About the brackish fish in SW, I would think some species are not better off in pure SW longterm...such as mudskippers, Anableps, etc

pretty much compatibility would be similar to that of any similarly-sized moray...things too big to be swallowed, not something too "nippy" that will pick at the eel
