Gyre aquariums

I recently read an article at advanced aquarist website on Gyre tank.

Is anyone running a functional Gyre tank? If so how do you have the flow set up?

when you can get it to run, do a search there is quite a nice video on a created horizontal gyre tank here on reefcentral.

Or you might check out the dendro thread. There are some gyre tanks in there.

I am still not positive of the difference between a horizontal gyre tank and a kriesel myself, best I can come up with is importance of lamnar flow vs the suspension of large objects in the water.

IMHO, the difference b/w gyer vs kreisel is the orientation. The water movement is of a unidirectional "circular" flow pattern.

Keisel: circular on a vertical plane

Gyer: circular on a horizontal plane. Sometimes it's difficult to visualize due to the rectangular shape of the display aquarium. Think of water flowing into the aquarium from one side and into the overflow on the opposite side.

gyre tanks can be done horizontal or vertical.this is very interesting.i read a couple articles about this myself and it sounds.......well interesting.it kinda makes sense, and i mean there is companies that do make wave boxes that pretty much in theory does the same thing.bump,i wanna see if anything is learned or known about this.

and not that it matters.but this gyre is somewhat achieved in my tank, except the fact i dont have a controller for my powerheads, the maxijet 1200 mod pretty much creates the flow they are talking about.although mine goes along the top around and down across the bottom going the other way(flow),instead of reverse as in the article(across the bottom around to the top and across).

Circular Flow Questions

Circular Flow Questions

Here is a top view of my 75-gallon aquarium. I am arranging the live rock in the center so that a horizontal circular flow is possible.

My questions are:

(1) Should the circular flow alternate between clockwise and counter-clockwise directions?
(2) How long should the water flow in one direction before it is reversed?
(3) What pump controller should I use?
(4) I am planning on using Maxi-Jet 1200 pumps simply because they can be side-mounted with a Sure Grip 50 magnet parallel to the glass wall. Besides the MJ-1200, what quiet and efficient pumps can be side-mounted parallel to the glass wall?

Thanks!
