H2Overflow

Anyone heard of these before?

http://customaquariums.com/c-2-h2overflow.aspx

I have a drilled tank and was thinking of using this to get more surface skimming. Only have a round strainer in the elbow and I don't think I am getting as good of skimming as I should. The other option would be to get a CPR retrofit overflow box. Just kinda afraid of taking my bulkhead apart.

I received the overflow yesterday, and I have to say I am impressed. I thought I was only going to get the elbow and overflow box. Instead I received those and a bulkhead, short piece of pipe, another elbow, hose fitting! Here are the pics.

Can't wait to get this setup and see how well it works.

OK guys I need your opinion on this. I tried to setup the overflow this morning and ran into a little trouble. Using the elbow fitting the top of the overflow is even with the bottom of the frame of the tank. Just a little to high for my liking. However, the kit also came with a 90 fitting that is not as tall. Do you think I will get the same amount of flow through the 90 as I would the elbow. Here are pictures of the two setups.

The difference will be minimal, the flow has to go through the short 90 either way. The barb fitting is a restriction, go with all PVC or Spa Flex to keep the restriction on it down.

All the plumbing outside the tank is existing and all PVC. The only change is on the inside of the tank. Wish I would have remembered about the 90 fitting when I was working on it this morning. Did not think of it until I already added water back into the tank. Will try again next weekend with my water change.

I am curious to see how noisy it will be, it is basically just an upturned elbow in the tank, which is a gurgle machine.

Found an issue with the new overflow system. I noticed while cleaning the glass that the top of the water had a film on it. Looking at the overflow I could see that surface water was not entering in on all sides. My water line ended up being even with the cap of the overflow box, and that was causing the skimming issue. To try to correct this I opened up the main return valve to allow more water to flow in the hopes of lowering my water level. Unfortunately, I had the valve fully open and my level did not drop. With the return valve fully open, I started to close the return line down. I closed the valve as much as I felt comfortable with and still could not get the water line down. As a last resort, I removed the cover from the overflow. Within second all of the surface film was gone. I opened up both valves fully and things seem to be running smooth. I don't want to leave the top off the overflow for obvious reasons. I think what I might do is find some plastic washers to go between the base and the cover to raise the cover a little bit. Hopefully that should fix the problem. Other that that the system seems to be working out very well.

I ordered a 300 gallon tank from these guys and it's going to have 3 of these overflows installed under the three braces. Weird that you had a film build up because they brag it has 17.5" of surface skimming. I have been using glass-holes overflow boxes on all my tanks. I hate those corner overflows that drain through the bottom. They take up so much real estate. The H2Overflow can drain 1200gph+ with one single 1.5" drain. My 1500gph overflow from glass-holes uses two 1.5" drains. They are suppose to be quiet too.

So, to summarize, it takes up less space in the tank, its quiet, requires less holes to be drilled, and has crazy skimming capacity. Of coarse I havnt gotten my hands on one yet but it looks like a great new product. Here is Custom Aquariums video. http://youtu.be/oBa8HIESdIw

How's it working out for you? I'm thinking of getting one for my 40 breeder. I'm also looking at getting the syphon stopper.

Well I finally got it setup and running. Much quieter then my previous setup! Gotta say that if anyone has a non-reef ready tank and needs an overflow this is a great product. Here are some before and after pics.

That's really just a slanted stand pipe, not an overflow. Anything is quieter than an open stand pipe.
