I have excessive hair algea in my 40 gal tank. Any ideas to get rid of it? It is choking out some of my coral. I have tried to pull as much of it out as I can, but that is not working. HELP!!! I am near my breaking point!!!!
Well it's feeding on something, what are your water parameters? Pulling it out helps, but you have to fix whatever the source is that's feeding that stuff, otherwise it's like trying to bail out the Titanic with a Dixie cup, you might win, but you'd have to be super human and work 24/7.
I would at least start with a substantial water change to help get rid of some of your nitrates (again water parameters would be helpful to know.)
Are you running a RO/DI? If not, a water change could cause more algae. Here are a few questions...
What lights do you have, and how old are the bulbs?
what is your feeding schedule like? What do you feed?
What kind of clean up crew and fish do you have in the tank?
